Suki sat on a long tree branch near the top of an oak tree, scowling bitterly at the beautiful sunset that set the horizon aflame. A cool, stiff wind rustled the bright green leaves around her, but she didn't appear to notice. She was lost in thought.
My Air Fangs... Her hand slid unconsciously to one of the two sheathes at her waist, but both hung empty at her sides. Her jaws clenched. Gone... It all seemed surreal, like some kind of twisted nightmare... She might have believed that it was, too, except for the fact that her treasured blades were now absent, and...
Another sharp, jolting pain shot through her wings, and her face twisted briefly in agony.
She slowly, cautiously drew them around herself, wincing as she gazed at the once-gleaming violet scales. Now the scales were bent and missing in places, and deep pockmarks etched the flesh beneath, as if she had been burned by acid.
It was a close enough comparison.
Her thoughts drifted back to the battle- A simple sparring match, it had started out as... Against a demon who seemed nice enough... Before they began the match. He called himself Bisshop, a 'glutton' demon, as he had put it.She'd had no idea that the meaning was so literal...
She'd charged at him, her Air Fangs drawn, and he had dodged easily. When she came at him a second time, just gauging his strength to see which dragon spell to unleash on him, he took her by surprise. He grabbed the blades, opened his mouth...
And out jetted a blast of a black, tar-like substance that rotted away anything it came into contact with.
Suki had instantly realized that she had two choices. Attempt to wrench her blades out of the demon's grip and dive away was the first. But that one was awfully flawed- She didn't know his physical stregth, and if she couldn't get her swords free in time, she would be blasted full in the face with the tar... Possibly with a fatal outcome.
The second was to let go of her swords and dodge.
She hesitated for just a moment, seriously disliking both choices... She hesitated an instant too long.
Now she knew that she would not be able to dive out of the way in time, no matter which choice she picked.
With a muttered curse, she reluctantly released her iron grip on her sword hilts and snapped her wings up, lightning fast, to cover her whole body.
The liquid hit her full-force, and she immediately wished she hadn't hesitated to drop her swords. It burned like fire, like venom... Like acid. She could feel her metal-hard scales dissolving, and then the flesh beneath them, rotting away...
Then a kick, impossibly strong, crashed through her wing-shield.
She was sent flying back, just managing to snap her wings open through the pain. The tar was flung off the wings, splattering the battlefield, but the demon simply opened his mouth, held her swords up...
And swallowed her Air Fangs, blades first.
Suki clenched her jaws together, remembering... As soon as they had dissappeared down his gullet, he had left... And now she was without a weapon.
But the Air Fangs were not just weapons... Suki Mara thought grimly. They contained ancient dragon spells... Spells that no one knows anymore...
... And...
They were the only things I had... From my past.
She groaned quietly and leaned back against the tree's vast trunk. That Bisshop demon's father promised to get them back for me, she reminded herself pointedly... And sighed. And how will he find me now if he does get them back? I'm not on his friend list. I would have to go back...
Her lip curled. The last thing she wanted was to return to that place... The place she'd been tormented, humiliated, overall annoyed...
... But her Air Fangs...
She pursed her lips and rose, wincing slightly at the small twinge or pain from her wings. She took a step forward and into thin air, plummeting out of the branch, which was quite high up. At the last second she snapped her wings open and landed lightly on the ground, teeth clenched from the sting of her wings... She sighed to herself and strode reluctantly back towards the dreaded clearing. The NeverWinter base.
I am going to get my Air Fangs back, She vowed silently, even if I have to cut open his stomach to do so.
