The Popular Topic
Ask anyone, and they’ll surely say yes, gays do deserve homes, education, security, equal job opportunities, and so on. But once you get to the part about marriage, they might say no. Why? More than half of the country claims that they support gays in all aspects except when it comes to marriage.

“Marriage is an institution between one man and one woman.” This is the most common argument that comes up around this topic. So what? “It says so in the dictionary!” So I suppose that ignorant people came up with that for the rest of us to go by. Who has such a heartless soul as to proclaim themselves to have the right to tell us who is able to marry? Isn’t that like a mayor saying who can and cannot move into his or her city?

“Gay relationships are immoral.” Did you get that from the bible? “Yeah!” In the First Amendment, it declares that all American citizens have the right to choose their own religion. That is why this country was formed, is it not? The bible’s word has no say in the American laws. It also says all of this in the Treaty of Tripoli of 1791. Not all religions condone gay marriages. In fact, in a few parts of Buddhism, homosexuality is actually celebrated and essential in Buddhist communities. (Same with Wiccans/voodoo traditions.) Therefore, even if you were to go in the direction of religion being a key in why marriage isn’t legal for them yet, you would be infringing their religious freedom.

“Marriage is seen throughout world history as being traditionally heterosexual.” Well, if I was taught correctly, slaves were rarely married as well. Look at that issue now.

“Gay marriage would force churches to marry gay couples when they have a moral objection to doing so.” Not at all. Churches/cathedrals have the power to deny marrying couples, so if they don’t want to, nobody is forcing them to.

“They might recruit.” That’s your problem, not the government’s. If you have a problem with people even being gay then there’s a simple way to fix that, remain heterosexual. Homosexuality is known as a preventable mental disease.

Allowing gay marriage is fair to all involved. If we give homosexual couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, this does not mean our country is asking all the homophobic people to accept gays. Your beliefs are your own, and no law can change that, but depriving people of declaring their love legally should not, and cannot, be allowed.

Banning gay marriage is a dilemma for the U.S. but there is a very simple solution. Wake up, America, and realize that gay marriage must be allowed. The individual agendas and morals of our representatives cannot determine or deprive a person a chance at happiness. Make the right decision.
