I had always known that Aekea was special, that something made it out of the ordinary. During the week of the Olympics, I had hoped my hardest that my town would bring home the gold. Bringing my average score to a 9.9, I was one of the top athletes of the town, but I wanted more. The small amount of things I did not use anymore in my home was given out in a raffle to encourage my fellow Aekeans to be the best they could be.
Despite it all, the town fell back into fourth place and did not place in the top three. Every night after the events, I would come home, sit out on my windowsill and watch the checkered flags flap in the breeze. I expected them to be pulled down within hours of the declaration of their placement.
I couldn't have been more proud of Aekea when not a single flag came down. Instead of their trophies being shoved underneath tables and beds, they were set on counters and shelves with pride. My own trophy sat on the table in my apartment despite Retrostacja's peculiar obsession with it.
Even now as I sat at my desk, sketching ideas for the Town Project, I could hear the flapping of the flags behind the noise of Retrostacja snoring. Adjusting my front panel from the darker static onto a much lighter tint, I used my own face as a light to work by during the hours of twilight.
