Chapter 7: Hang

After the meeting was over, Ashley and I left immediately. The race was in two days! We both went home to pack as much of our stuff as we could at the time. I was at least going to choose my weapons for the trip. My chain scythe obviously! Weapon number two was my favorite bow. I have four. Now it was between a spear, bo-staff, or a katana. I chose the katana. Simple.

After that, I went to get some lunch. I made my way to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator to see what was there. Chicken, spaghetti, something in a to-go box Kimi brought home…ramen it is! I made myself some beef ramen and some orange juice to wash it down.

Just then, Grandpa entered the kitchen. He moved in with us since Grandma died when I was seven. It was a lot easier for us to cope and it still is to me. “Ramen again, Dyron?” he asked sitting at the table.

“Mm-hm!” I nodded swallowing some juice. Ramen is one of my most favorite foods ever! “Always gonna eat the stuff! Even when I’m as old as you!” I said to him.

“Old? You got some definition of old! I’m only 62! You’re not a senior citizen until you’re 65!” Grandpa ranted.

Grandpa was always one who loved to joke. Kimi walked in through the back door as usual. She was coming home from work; a clothes store at the strip mall not too far from our neighborhood. “I swear Dy! Eat anymore of that crap and you’ll turn into it!” she nagged. I thought about that for a moment. If I did turn into ramen, I’d eat myself!

“You nag like your grandmother! I know you’re her grandchild for sure!” Grandpa commented. Kimi and Mom did. Especially at me and Dad since we’re the most alike.

“Hey Grandpa!” she smiled kissing him on the forehead. “Someone has to keep him in line!” And with that, she walked past him towards her room.

“How was work?” he called back.

“Fine, as always!” she replied and her door slammed shut. Who knows what she did in there? I never had many reasons in my entire life to go in there. If I did, she wasn’t home and it would be only for a split second.

I had finished my food and was going back to the school to pick up Anthony so we could spend the afternoon together along with Ashley. “Later!” I said running out the door. I stuck my arm back in to grab my chain scythe which was sitting by the door. I wrapped up the chain and slung it over my body. It was hanging off my shoulder and came across my body with the blade between the chain.
I stopped at Ashley’s house to find that she was too busy packing to join us. So she told me to go ahead and have fun. I made my way back to school and sat on the wide stone railing of the front stairs. The rock was cold and uncomfortable, especially with this chain partially under my butt. I shifted around until I found a comfortable position and waited.

The bell rang and with only a second of silence, the school emptied its contents. Eventually, Anthony appeared and I attacked him with a jump kick. He blocked with his forearm and punched at my stomach, but I pushed off his blocking arm and back flipped into the grassy area that surrounded the school. “Hey!” I finally spoke.

“Yo,” he said jumping down. As we were leaving, I heard a female voice calling me.

“Hey Dyron! Dyron!!” Curstan shouted. “Hold on! Let’s hang out for awhile!” she offered as we stopped and she walked up.
