Druantia sighs again, finding a place to sit. Carefully, she smooths the wrinkles from her velvet dress. A far away expression fills her normally empty eyes as her long memory takes her back hundreds of years, to a time when she had been a mere human child.

"A long time ago, I was the child of a Druidic priest in the land of the Celts. I think today my land of origin is called 'Wales.' Yes, I was a human. A young, innocent little girl who loved foxes."

"Little did I know that upon my fourteenth year, I would catch the eye of a roving traveler from the Carpathian Mountains. It turned out he held the title of Duke in those hills, and my father could not turn down such a fortuitous marriage for me. Thus, I was handed over to this Duke, against my will, intended to become is wife."

"I was afraid of this man. He never stopped starin at me, his eyes hungry and red like blood. The day before we were to be wed, he caught me alone in my chambers, and forced me against a wall. I had no idea what he was doing; I thought I was being punished for some misdeed. I only wish that had been the case, for that night was when I first became a vampire."

"Terrified of what he was, and what I had become, I fled the morning before the wedding, deep into the hills. As the sun rose, it burned my flesh and my eyes; my eyes that had turned crimson and empty. Crying, I tried to hide, but there were no trees dense enough during the early winter to hide my entire human body from the sun's searing rays. In despair, I collapsed next to a fallen log, not caring what happened to me next. Little did I know that inside that log lived a family of my spiritual companions, the foxes."

"That night, I awoke to the smell of dry leaves and the touch of warm fur. When I opened my eyes, I realized that somehow I had ended up within a den of red foxes. They regarded me with bright, cat-like eyes, strange purring sounds coming from their chests. It was when the largest of the foxes crawled forward and licked my face, that I realized I had somehow taken the form of a fox as well."

"And so I lived for years in the forest, in the guise of a vixen fox, feeding upon small animals, and slowly forgetting my humanity. Only when my life was in jeopardy, when a band of hunters released their hounds upon me, that I returned to my human form in defense. The baffled hounds left me then, and two very confused hunters, a father and a son, brought me home to their estate to be fed and dressed."

"There, I could have lived for centuries, if true humans did live that long. But the call of the fox I had become was too strong in my heart, and a few months after being brought back to the world humans know, I shifted my form back to that of a vixen, and chose the path of the spirit fox, to haunt and protect the forests forevermore."

Druantia kisses the night,
In a dream of a thousand lovers.
Her touch can't be denied,
When you hear your name in the shadows.
