Seeing 'Geek Chic' come into fashion has done little more than confuse me.
As I'm a full time nerd and part time "Fashionistaaaa" you'd probably think geek chic would be great for me, but it sure as hell isn't.
I was unfortunate enough to miss the memo saying geeks were suddenly cool.
During a brief walk through town after a night of gaming with my equally nerdy partner James, I wandered about wearing a Mario t-shirt, black pair of jeans and my glasses so I could just about get away with not wearing much make up because I really couldn't be bothered.
I wandered and wandered until a group of girls caught my eye... they were all dressed like nerds and I couldn't quite believe my eyes. As I approached the group of similarly garbed girls, we got chatting... About fashion? I could hardly believe my luck, a group of girls with my two favourite things all rolled into one neat little package. An absolute goldmine to me, I finally thought I could find girls for my male geeky friends, who unlike their regular girlfriends, these nerdy chicks didn't have moustaches.
It's all going swimmingly until one starts talking about the amount of calories in a piece of cake she's eating... I find myself thinking, "Ooh, go on, say something funny..... here goes......"
"You know what they say, the cake is a lie"
I was greeted with utterly blank stares.
Surely, any nerd would get an obvious Portal reference....
This was when I suddenly became painfully aware that they were faux nerds.
FAUX NERDS?!
What in the name of all that is good and holy would allow there to be a reason why pretending to be a freakin' nerd would make you cool?!
SERIOUSLY?!
One of the girls was wearing a Zelda t-shirt and when I questioned her about it she though Zelda was the main characters name so she can't even have touched the box!
I almost felt like my heart had been ripped out by these evil succubi. Why must people take the things I love most and suck everything fun out of it until all that is left is a cowering, violated, abused, tormented hollow shell of what it once was?
Geek chic surely goes against the very idea of geek itself.
In my eyes, geek has always been about being yourself, being slightly TOO in to the thing you're in to, up until the point where you could tell someone about Star Trek for five hours straight, know how many more DS's sold than PSP's and inform every Sony fanboy you've ever met about it. Geek is about being passionate about something that seems childish to everyone else. regardless of being mocked for it.
These girls were, in a way, the Anti-Geek. Geek is being yourself, geek chic is about pretending to be someone else.
Come up with your own fashion and leave ours well alone!
