I stopped writing after that last gleeful night in Durem, but it was for good reason: I was in serious hot water with Gambino (who was furious at being tricked and not listened to), Cindy (who was furious at being left to defuse him), Bucho (who was furious about the small bomb scare Louie had caused) and Geebus (who was furious about our consumption of dessert while ignoring the rest of the meal). Of course, that was not all my fault, but Sally is a child, so nobody considered her responsible, and Louie's too bloody important...so yeah, I got bawled out a lot, and was in no mood to write about my humiliation.
Still, things are OK, or at least as OK as they ever are. I haven't made up with Gambino yet (like I care?), but I got back on good terms with Cindy in time for Sally's thirteenth birthday, which was a good thing, as Cindy was gloomy most of the day. She kept her news-reporter front up good enough that Sally didn't notice anything though, and Sally had a great time. She claimed to have never had a birthday cake or presents before...I got her a cute pillow shaped like a cat's head, and Cindy got her a whole new set of clothes (like she'll wear them?) and a bunch of books, and a spiffy new digital SLR camera. I was a bit annoyed by the latter, which Sally had apparently asked Cindy for, because I don't want a repeat of the fairground incident. Cindy doesn't know about that, and I can only hope the value of the camera will keep Sally from treating it like that old thing she had there!
My eighteenth birthday was good too. Louie and Ian both showed up that evening, Louie to apologize to all of us for his part in those shenanigans, and Ian to clarify the "Count Von Helson" issue.
"I'm afraid I'm technically the count now," he said rather sheepishly, "or would be if I wasn't widely considered a traitor to the vampires. We've asked Gambino to stop referring to Louie as that, but I don't much think he'll listen. He really wants to feel he has nobility as courtiers... Anyway, I don't mind, but could you stop calling Louie that, Sally? There's enough gossip going around as it is, and I don't want to give anyone any ideas...well, do we get to stay for the cake?"
I didn't read much into Ian's words until later, when he rather sharply told off Sally for calling him "Count Von 'elson". "I'm Ian to you, and I've told you to drop the accent!" he said. "Don't you think I have enough to worry about without Zhi...oh, I forgot your present, Dawna!"
The present was a very nice green coat, wonderful for winter, but I was a bit worried about what he'd nearly said. I didn't think it polite to mention the Sniper at a birthday party, even my own, so I didn't bring it up...and I did get some nice loot! A good pair of headphones and a pair of ugly-but-comfy trackpants from from Sally (I bet Cindy gave her the money for them!), a large box of chocolates from Louie, and a large Barton Jewellers gift card from Cindy, who said I was an adult and so should choose my own present. I need to use it before the end of the year, so I might buy her an Xmas present with it. That would be funny!
Of course, there was then the mess at Halloween, in which I stayed human, only fought in self-defence, and served coffee and sandwiches to those in need of them...and in which Sally attempted to run off to the vampires, and was returned by a very not-amused Louie. It was then that Sally's unwitting guilt-tripping of Cindy started to get very annoying...something is going to snap soon, but it won't be me who tells Sally what's going on. Cindy will have to do that little task herself...
Oh yes, and on top of everything else, there's the new menace of the Animated. Where that's going (or where it came from!), I have no clue, but I'm enjoying it, in an odd way...and it does give a reason to start writing again!
