Chapter 19: A Plan in Motion
I was late the next evening when it happened. Ashley and I were enjoying the sunset on upper deck. It reminded me of Curstan before her fight, though this was the complete opposite time of day. But I digress. Suddenly, something rammed the ship! It came from starboard and the impact sent us flying.
“Hang on to me!” I called grabbing my partner over the rush of churning water. There was still something rocking the boat vigorously from underneath us. I had my chain scythe around me at the time so I swung it and sent it flying to catch the ship’s railing. It caught and wrapped around once, twice, three times...four! I tugged at it to make sure it would support and fortunately, it did.
“Yes! It caught, thank God!” Ashley cheered. She was latched on to my waist as I’d instructed as I gripped the chain for dear life. The crew had come rushing up from lower deck, just as shaken as us.
“What’s the trouble?!” the captain asked. Without waiting for an answer, they manned their stations. They calmed the ship and all was silent again. It was only the beginning though. You could feel circling the boat. The boat swirled slowly with the unknown being.
“Aw, s**t! Get ready Ashley! You best break out the lightning! Something’s coming!” I whispered with a grin.
“Get that look off your face! I know that look!” she ordered still doing as I said. She knew it meant I was ready to fight. Obviously her warning was wasted, for not a moment later, to our right, the water exploded, drenching us. We looked up to see a serpentine monster bearing huge, yet sharp fangs.
It was a male exactly as the book described. Right then Ashley let go of me and fired her spell at the head beast, only to miss. It dove back into the water with incredible speed! The crew kept the boat steady as tipped fiercely as a result of the evasion. The serpent appeared on the opposite side of the ship, and I whipped around, still holding the chain about me, and fired two arrows. They sailed into this mouth only pissing off more than it already was.
He threw his head at the ship but Ashley casted an ice spell to repel it. The ice formed a huge wall the monster did not expect and it was too close to stop itself. It smashed into the wall leaving a giant splatter of blood. The wall then cracked and broke, falling on the beast’s head and they sunk in the strait.
We were all quiet as the area was stained a dark red from the blood. Finally we all let out shouts and cheers! We’d defeated yet another large demon! I wrapped Ashley in a tight hug, picking her up. “OMFG! That was amazing!”
“I know! I totally kicked that thing’s a**!” she bragged. The sun had now set and the stars now led the way to shore. Now that it was dark, you couldn’t the shoreline as well. Knowing we were a day away and not being able to see the shore annoyed me. This was something I had no control over though. I unwrapped the chain scythe from around the railing. I walked back over to her still smiling.
“What if it comes back?” I teased her.
She punched me in the shoulder and laughed, “Then I’ll kick his a** again! I got mad skills!” After another laugh, retired for the night and rocked to sleep by the calming waves.
