"Sen got it. It's the Spanish Flu. Gorn's was also right when he guessed H1N1, but that was after Sen's answer.

"Here's the explanation of the riddle:

I came first.
Once was silence.
The flu came in two waves. The first wave hit in the spring. It was highly contagious, but rarely deadly. It disappeared when summer came.
Twice was death. The second wave came in the fall. That was the deadly version of the Spanish Flu that everyone knows.

"I'm rather surprised the first part was the part that was solved. The second was much easier. It was sleeping sickness. There's actually more than one illness referred to as sleeping sickness: the one transmitted by the tsetse fly, and the one that had an epidemic from 1915 to 1926. The riddle was referring to the latter. It's also called sleepy sickness and encephalitis lethargica. Many researchers believe it is related to the Spanish Flu as some kind of immune response because they occurred almost one right after the other."
