I had a very rude (and cold) awakening this morning at 3:30. I woke up for no good reason that turned out to be a very good reason. When I roused, I heard some commotion. People were shouting, "Where's all this smoke coming from?", "Fire, get them out!" I got up to look out the window and saw that the owners were running around the hotel in their pjs. I tried to turn the light on, but I noticed that nothing happened. That was when I saw that the power was completely out.
Before I knew it, I put two and two together. They were running outside in sub-zero temps in their pjs because the hotel was on fire! I spit out my splint and grabbed my coat, not even considering that my feet only had socks on. They started pounding on the doors, yelling at everyone to get out. Me and Darin stood watching as smoke continued to spew out of the roof. The only time I ran back inside was to get my car keys to move my car away from the hotel.
We watched as the smoke continued to come out of the roof. I remembered that my glasses were in my room yet, and when I asked the officer if I could get them, he said I couldn't. That meant that I couldn't drive. So I parked my car at the Kwik Trip and me and Darin stayed in the gas station until about 6 am.
I did manage to get most of my stuff back thanks to the Onalaska Fire Department. And, the best part is, I will be able to get everything back that is still in the room, I'm just waiting for the ok now. Robert is coming out here and will try to get the rest of my things from the room, but we may have to wait for a while. My dad was going to come out here with contacts because the fire could have taken everything I had, but since it didn't, I didn't need them. I got my glasses back along with most of my things. My dad isn't coming out here now.
The fire was centralized over the main office, so the attic is what mainly got damaged. I have a few things left in the room, like some mugs, cups, and some other things, but I'll survive. If I can get my soap for my shower, my other pairs of contacts, and my jewelry, I'll be as happy as ever.
Right now, I'm staying in the Baymont, maybe until tomorrow. There's a snow storm coming this way. We'll see how bad it gets. I just really want to go home now...
