The Twilight Sage: The One Link Between Light and Shadow
I'm Chi, the Sage of Twilight. This is my journal filled with random stuff that I feel like telling people. If you choose to take a peek into my brain, cool! Good for you. Have a cookie!
"The Word", a short narrative
In the midst of the dark and shallow dive, the joker and his harlequin sat among many of the city’s scum. They were typically welcome there, so no one questioned their presence. At the moment, they held their place at the very front of the stage, anxious to see the new performance that was advertised all throughout the slums of town.
“This is gonna be fun, puddin’,” the harlequin whispered to her joker. He nodded in agreement. Although they were both perceived as disgusting, vile, heartless criminals, they found some solace in seeking entertainment every once in a while.
But before the joker could answer his harlequin, the dark violet curtains pulled at opposite ends of the stage. All the lights went out, leaving the entire dive shrouded in black. But, even in the darkness, the joker could see the outlines of several individuals, the most predominant silhouette towering from the center of the stage.
An earsplitting sound emitted from the stage, which later turned out to be an electric violin. A shock of purple light illuminated the stage, and the bodies on the stage, save for the one that towered in the center, began to twitch and swerve with the rhythm of the music. As more light filled the stage, the joker was able to get a better view of the towering figure, whom he assumed was the performer that he and his harlequin came to see.
Her hair was slate colored, like pure steel, and erupted in the form of many small curls that sprouted from both sides of her head. Her skin was the color of caramel; her eyes blood ruby red. Her left leg was possessed by dark tribal markings, but something pulled at the joker’s intuition telling him that those were not tattoos. Atop her head sat two large bat wings, literally sprouting from her skull. She was cloaked in a long black dress, torn and ripped in many different areas, making the girl look dead. As she too moved with the music, the joker was able to notice the bat wings tattooed on her shoulder blades. She took a deep breath and emerged from the sea of her fellow performers, preparing to sing:

I want to hold you to the sun
I want to be your faithful one
I want to show you all the beauty
You don't even know you hold.
I'm hurting you for your own good
I'd die for you - you know I would
I'd give up all my wealth
To buy you back the soul you never sold.

More light, now red and blue, began to cast down on the stage:

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave.
I want to earn your trust
Your faith your heart
You'll never be deceived .

The electric violin blared again, and it became clear to the joker that it was the girl who played it at the song’s interlude. The harlequin pressed herself to the joker’s frame, from both fear and excitement that the performance provided. But the joker continued to stare, overwhelmed with some emotion that he himself couldn‘t register:

I want to heal you pretty sweet
I'll throw rose petals at your feet.
I'll spend eternity
Comparing all my poetry to yours.
I want to see love through your eyes
You'll never have to compromise.
I'll give up all my fame
To fight your demons and your bloody wars.

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave.
I want to earn your trust
Your faith, your heart
You'll never be deceived .

The girl moved closer to the joker and the harlequin. The joker couldn’t help but mentally cringe at the girl’s face; there was something so familiar about her, but it wasn’t that that frightened him. For the first time in his life, the joker was thoroughly petrified by the rage in the girl’s eyes. They seemed to brighten in their radiant red hue as she moved closer to them. Then, in a harsh voice, she asked the joker, and the joker alone:

Are you suffering?
Are you suffering?
Are you suffering?
Are you suffering?!
Are you suffering?
Are you suffering?
Are you suffering?
Are you suffering?!

Are you suffering?
I want your suffering.
I want your beautiful suffering,
I want to see your pain!

Are you suffering?
I want your suffering.
I want your beautiful suffering,
I want to see your pain!

The girl’s brilliant face was only inches from the joker’s, her sweet breath fanning him as she sang. Her lips moved closer to him, until he could feel her singing into his ear. He felt the sharp sting of her words, and, through the corner of his eye, was able to see the glowing white fangs that lined her mouth as she sang to him.

Are you suffering?
I want your suffering.
I want your beautiful suffering,
I want to see your pain!

Are you suffering?
I want your suffering.
I want your beautiful suffering,
I want it.
I want it!!

The girl quickly pulled away from him to continue her performance. The harlequin felt her joker turn cold and stiff beside her. She thought that it was just the performance, the excitement of the show, that gripped him, until she noticed how pale her joker was beneath his white face makeup; how wide his eyes were, how his entire frame trembled from the close encounter he just shared with the young performer.

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave.
I want to earn your trust
Your faith, your heart
You'll never be deceived.

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave.
I want to earn your trust
Your faith, your lust
You'll never be deceived.

The girl then hoisted the joker by his tie and pulled him to the stage. She began to circle him like a vulture, her eyes never leaving his face, now a twisted petrified mask of fear.

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave.

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave.

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave.

The joker turned to face her, to fight her, but when their eyes met, he was stone. Her brilliant fangs radiated under the red spotlight, her eyes emanating bloodlust.

I want to mix our blood
And put it in the ground
So you can never leave!
