Chapter 22: Meet You There

The next morning, the four of us traveled together until we saw that both our maps were correct in saying that three miles ahead, was a fork in the path. Both led to the plains. It was just a matter of who’d get to the 2/3 mark first.

“The left path makes a wide curve but comes back around and you’ll hit the plains. The right only veers slightly to the opposite direction,” Curstan observed.

“So which path do you want? Either way we’re going about an equal distance to the same place,” Ashley asked them. Kratias quickly talked it over and decided to go with the right path.

“It’s settled then. Kratias right, Neravien left! Meet you there!” Nathan said with a wave. And so we went our separate ways. This would amount to about two days with a distance of 23.8 miles. Round it to 24 and that’s an easy 12 miles a day.

Day 1 was uneventful besides the deer hunting I did for dinner. Day 2 had us hyped up to hit the plains. We got there about midday. The plains were a spectacular spectrum of colors! There were flowers and plants in full bloom as well as fresh green grass and a few small scattered trees. It was already pretty hot here with summer just around the corner.

“It’s so beautiful here Dy!” Ashley gasped. She picked a few wild flowers, put one in her hair. It was a bright yellow flower that went well with her blonde hair. She put the rest away for safe keeping. Ashley then held my hand as we walked on through the open space. It was almost disorienting to find our general direction with out the use of a compass or something. The sun seemed to cover the entire sky when it shined and a cloud would occasionally cut the bright light off for a minute or two.

“I wonder if Kratias is out here yet,” asked sort of ignoring her statement. That wasn’t really my intention.

She shrugged and seemed not to care that I did. One annoyance that we found had arisen quickly was the large number of insects. Gnats, flies, bees, wasps, dragonflies (though I actually like those) were everywhere! They flew near our faces and above our heads. We stopped briefly to spray each other down with insect repellant to keep them at bay.

As we settled down for the evening, I went over the map for the general course. This was my report to Ashley: “Well I estimate for us to be out of here in approximately…” I stopped myself realizing how big this area was in comparison to the mountain or the waters. “You won’t like this,” I told her. “About a month and a half!”

“Hell no I don’t like it!” she replied angrily. She slammed a fist into the ground, holding it there for a moment. When she calmed down, she asked, “Why that long?”

I sat up straight to answer her. “One,” I said putting up a finger, “we’re on foot. Two,” another finger rose, “Wildlife around here is numerous and are not afraid to attack anything they aren’t familiar with!”

“You’re right! We have to avoid confrontation with hostile animals and demons around here as much as possible.”

“Demons and hostility is pretty much synonymous! Remember, this is Humanoid Territory!” I reminded her. There are at least 15 different tribes of Humanoids in the plains. It’s impossible to give each a main area thanks to their erratic nomadic, patterns.

“We’d best prepare for an interesting trip!” I told Ashley as we lay down to sleep. Little did I know how right I was going to be!
