The Case of the Top Hat murderer Ch. 2
Chapter 2

My eyes were fixed on the door, I was waiting for the person on the otherside to enter my office. As he stepped through the door, I guessed he was the gentleman I had been speaking to on the phone 10 minutes ago. He was wearing a light blue jacket and matching light blue trousers, he was wearing black shoes that had patches of wet mud on his shoes. Just by noticing that I could tell I would have to clean the floor after he left, I held out my hand and started to speak.

"Hello sir, i'm detective Edmund Harm, how can I be of service" the stranger took a step forward and shook my hand, it was a firm handshake, the kind you would expect if you were meeting with your employer.
"Hello detective, I believe we spoke on the phone about 10 minutes ago"
"Yes I remember, may I ask who you are and what purpose you have here?" I asked, eager to hear the response to see if my guess was right.
"Of course, I am a police constable from Scottland yard, my sergent asked me to come down here and see if there was anything I could do to help you on the case" at this point I was wondering who knew about the murders.
"How did he know about the murders?" I asked, this time I had no idea what the answer would be.
"Well we recieved a letter a few days about a murder, they said they found a black top hat lying on the chest of the victim, it seemed a lot like a few murders that took place not that far from London" I was looking at his expresions and could see that he was telling the truth, he had dark brown hair, his hair was quite messy, part of it was covering his right eye.
"So you think it is the same killer?" I already knew the reply, I was wondering why I actually asked that question.
"We are quite certain that the murders are linked, there always seems to be a top hat left on the chest of the victim, if it is then this person has murdered six people already, and it isn't only female victims, there have been 2 male victims and 4 female victims"
"So there are no connections between the victims?"
"None that we could find, we guess the killer is just murdering random people" his expression changed and he looked worried
"So you want to help me to catch whoever did this?"
"Thats what I was thinking, hopefully we can catch them soon"
"Yeah I hope so too, you haven't told me your name yet"
"Oh sorry, I guess I was too busy explaining why I was here, you can just call me Matt"
"Well its nice to meet you Matt, are you staying at a hotel near here?"
"Yeah i'm staying at a hotel just up the road, why?"
"Well meet me here at 8 o'clock tomorrow and we will go and see the sergent at the station tomorrow" I waited for him to ask why I wanted him to go with me, but he didn't ask.
"Okay, i'll see you then detective" he waved his hand and walked out the door, the door slammed behind him.

I stood up and picked my dark brown jacket off the wooden chair, I gently put my coat on and walked towards the door. I opened the door and shut it tightly behind me, I pulled my keys out of my pocket and locked the door. I took my time walking down the steps leading away from my office, since it was cold, there were patches of ice on the steps and slipping and falling down stone steps would give anyone a bad injury. I reached the bottom of the steps and started walking quickly down the path, the sky was clear, but it was freezing the longer I spent out here, the more chance i had of catching a really bad cold, I reached the door to my home. I unlocked the door and pushed it open gently, it was a small house that was built next to apartment buildings so it looked weird when people walked past, but to me a house was a house, somewhere were you can stay and feel safe. I took my jacket off and walked up the stairs to the bedroom. I walked back down the stairs next morning, I woke up later than I expected to, so I was in a hurry. I didn't have any time to get breakfast, I picked the keys up off the table and opened the door. I locked the front door and dropped my house keys into my jacket pocket and started to jog down the street towards the police station. I met with Matt outside the station, he looked exactly the same as he did yesterday, except his shoes weren't covered in mud. We walked up the stairs to the police station and we wen't inside, the inside looked clean, there was no litter anywhere and the walls looked spotless. I walked along the corridor with Matt slowly following my steps, I reached the police sergents door and I knocked quite hard on the wooden door. I heard a rough sounding voice from the room behind the door, I turned the door handle and pushed the door open slowly. I saw the sergent sitting behind his desk, he was a well built man, but looked like he had been eating a few too many doughnuts over the past few weeks, he put his hand out in a gesture for us to take a seat on the two chairs in front of the desk.

"Welcome detective Edmund Harm and ...." he held his hand out towards Matt.
"I'm an officer from Scottland Yard, sir, just call me Matt" Matt shook the police sergents hand.
"So you must be helping detective Harm with the investigation" he said quickly glancing between me and Matt
"How did you know I would help out with the case" I asked waiting to hear the reply
"Well I knew you were looking for a case and I know that you would want to get this person off the streets as soon as possible" the sergent said staring right at me
"So what do you know about the killer?" Matt asked holding a pen against a notepad ready to take notes
"The same as you should know, we don't know who it would be, we have no idea who he may attack next" the sergent said with a worried expression on his face
"So we will need to go back to the crime scene and search for clues on the killer?" I asked as the sergents expression changed back to normal
"Well that would help you on the case so I suggest that you go to the first crime scene, it was where the first victim was killed 2 days ago, the crime scene has been desturbed so you may not find anything that may help" the sergent said
"Sir, if I may add that wouldn't have been the first victim, there were a few murders not too far away from here, I guess you hadn't found out about them yet" Matt said to the sergent.
"If that is true then I believe it would be better for everyone if you left to start the hunt for the killer" he had a shocked expression on his face and he lifted his hand and made a gesture for us to leave his office, me and Matt stood up and walked out of the office and left the police station and walked down the street.
