DEMOX: ch. 25
first of all a big birthday shout out to my gf Star!! LOVE YOU BABY!!! heart heart heart

Chapter 25: Vermendis

Minutes later, Ashley was perfectly fine, as if she’d done the healing herself! I just had to know how this was being done. “So…Star…” I began.

“Yes Dyron?”

“How do you and Sparx do what you do?” I asked. I was for some reason now nervous talking to her.

“Well we’re Demox just like you,” she answered without really answering me. I mean, yeah that’s logic but I wanted to know where they got this power to do magic without the rings.

“You don’t have any jewelry or anything like me though! That’s the only way you can do magic, right?” Ashley pointed out.

Sparx smiled and answered, “We’re a rare breed, us Vermendians! The only of our kind. That is why we are ‘The Lost Race’. No one knows that we even exist anymore!”

“What do you mean? What’s a Vermendian?” I kept asking.

Star finally began to explain fully. “Ok, listen. This place is called Vermendis because in the ancient tongue, it means ‘The Lost Race’. Millennia ago, there were no such things as rings or jewelry. Not such thing as Demoxing! There were only the masses of demons and defenseless Moracians and that Demox wasn’t created until a few centuries ago. That’s what your historians decided to tell you. But here’s the real story! Those same “defenseless Moracians” were the creators of Demox! They were able to gather the natural energy around them and over centuries back then, were able to use this power at will! There were no Battles of Defenders. Mages were the first, though the name only came when some ended up being born with only healing or no magic at all. Soon, no one could and they used the same method as their ancestors to harness this power, only this time into objects,” said the beauty.

“Ok, the history of Demox. What about you? You lost Demox?” I pressed on.

“I’m getting to it!” Star answered quickly. And she did by explaining, “Once they thought there were no more Natural Mages, that’s when they finally decided to use jewelry as the standard item of magic storage. Rulers knew we existed in few numbers. We resided scattered across your three cities Lamis, Neravien, and Kratias. Year after year we see you travel through our land and some have been badly injured or killed by the demons in the area. But anyway, the ruling body at the time was preparing for Earth’s arrival, about 70 years ago, and their first order of business was to get rid of us. We were gathered and eventually exiled to these plains. To this day they know we exist, though they think common folk like you two would riot and ultimately go into civil war over whether we should be brought back or not.”

“I see. Then you should make yourselves known to us common folk!” I said after a moment to think.

“Dyron are you crazy?! What are you on? Did you just a word Star just said? Your people could go into civil war because of us!! If we show our faces they’d kill us most likely!” Sparx shouted.

I didn’t believe that. I stayed calm, unphased by her sudden outburst. “Most likely is still a fighting chance. You could return, and be accepted with open arms! It’s not all of you have to come, either. At least one of you to prove it. What about you. Star?” I offered.

“Sounds fun! Sure I will! This place sucks anyway. I’ll leave whenever you do,” she agreed. It seemed as if her answer was sarcastic, as I’ve seen her be. But something told you she was dead serious.

Ashley and Sparx stared at her, extremely puzzled. “Now think about this Star! You really want to leave behind everything you know and love for something you might get killed for? We’re in enough trouble as it is! Are you suicidal? This was not your job Star!” Sparx continued.

“I know what the hell my job was! It was to destroy all unwelcome beings within close proximity of the village. Especially ‘demons and outsider Demox in the race’.” Hearing this, me and Ashley jumped up, ready for action. “Sit down. We wouldn’t heal you if we were going to kill you!” Star said quietly. She was right. Besides, it was too late to kill anyone now. “Ashley, you know just as well as me that I could’ve killed you both with that last attack. But…I didn’t,” Star said somewhat relieved.

“No, because you have a crush him, don’t you?” Sparx asked. She didn’t require an answer. No one did.

“Mhm,” Star nodded shyly. Our eyes met for a second and we turned away from each other, quite embarrassed. As I stood looking at the floor, I knew that I really liked her too even though we hardly knew each other. She even tried to kill my best friend and I just forgave her as if we’d almost bumped into each other or something as trivial as that. Finally, she snapped out it and said, “Let’s go to my house. You can stay there for the night and in the morning we’ll leave.”

Sparx stood up and hugged her friend. “I love you Star. I want you to be happy, so I’ll let you go. Even though we can’t ever see each other ever again! Good bye!” she said tearfully. After a while of silence and hugs, Star left with us at her heels.
