"The words you hear could be the reason why you were born."
"M-Mother?!"
Mrs. Schooss laughed. "Ah, Michelle! So you are here!" The woman put her hands on her desk, obviously enjoying the moment. "Vladimir, I must commend you for this; actually choosing my daughter? What made you choose her for this joke?"
"Nothing, Mrs. Schooss," Vladimir answered, "An orb choose her."
She raised a drawn eyebrow. "Really now, van Duuke? An orb?" Vladimir nodded. "That's impossible! No matter how picky the orb, orbs never choose someone with no knowledge or experience. My daughter didn't even know of orbs, until today!" Her eyes whipped towards Michelle, whose eyes were downcast. "Michelle! Raise your head, that's bad posture."
Michelle reluctantly raised her head, her eyes shadowed.
"Mrs. Schooss, I understand you're upset that Ms. Michelle was chosen for such a dangerous sitiuation-"
"A danerous situation?" Mrs. Schooss stood up in her seat, her eyes burning with an unsaid fury. "Being chosen for this predictament is practically being chose for a death sentence!"
"Madam, with all due respect, your daughter is perfectly capable of handling an orb with no experience! She was especially chosen to handle an orb, so knowledge of an orb must be redundant-"
Mrs. Schooss interrupted again. "Nonsense! I will not allow my daughter to enter a death zone! Michelle, go down stairs and wait for me! I'm taking you home!"
"But Mother-"
"No buts! Go!"
The shy girl let her lips quiver before she hit the button to the elevator softly, leaving without a word.
Ashley, hurt for Michelle sake, looked at Mrs. Schooss. The woman had watched her daughter leave with sad eyes before sitting suddenly with her hand on her temples. She sighed before looking at Vladimir.
"Mrs. Schooss..."
"Van Duuke," she said, sounding a bit hurt, "there's no way I can put her out there."
"Madam, I must beg to differ! Ms. Michelle is perfectly capable!" Vladimir put both hands on her desk, and squared his shoulders. "The aura she exerts is strong enough to sense from several miles away!"
The woman gave Vladimir an irrtated look. "I know that very well, Mr. van Duuke, and that's why she must be protected! If I had my way, she would have never known of the world of orbs."
"But you can't defend her forever, Mrs. Schooss. You know that, too. Everything about her is just as perfectly engineered as these children are for the orbs they were assigned to!"
Ashley and Rafael looked at one another, then Ashley glanced at Kylee, who just smiled at her. While the twosome argued over Michelle's fate, Ashley asked, "Is... that true?"
"What is?" Kylee asked.
"That we were... engineered?"
"Somewhat. It's more like we were born for the orbs. It's just... fate."
"Ah, sweetie!"
Michelle turned, her eyes still low. "Y-Yes...?" Her ankles were crossed gently as she sat on one of the couches, waiting for her mother.
Emily came up to her. "May I sit?"
The girl nodded, and moved over slightly for Emily. The woman sat, and took a breath before saying, "Please don't give up." Brown eyes dug in Michelle's black. "I beg of you, please don't. The OS needs you and your friends together. There are millions at stake." Emily took Michelle's shoulders in her hands. "Only Emma knows what Mrs. Schooss is like, but from Emma, I know your mother enough. She's worried about you and your abilities because-"
"ARGH!"
And next thing Michelle knew, her legs had stood, and she was face to face with a creature ten times her size, with teeth as big as her arm. The creature looked around at the panicked empolyees, glass scattered everywhere, and the random screams of, "Monster!" Then he laid eyes on the small Michelle and the glaring Emily. Ignoring Emily, the thing stared at Michelle with pasty yellow eyes.
"You..."
Michelle choked up, unable to look away as the animal closed in. She managed to take a step back before Emily said, "Michelle."
"Huh...?"
"Get behind me." Michelle did as she said, still unable to look away from the unworldly creature. The headset connected to her ears began blinking when she pressed a button on the ear section.
"E's. Come in E's." Emily began stepping back as the unidentified animal tried to get closer. "Can you hear me?" Her voice was beginning to lose its calm.
"We're here, Emily. What's wrong?" Michelle could hear several voices from the head set saying one line at the same time.
"We have a Code Me.L4-4."
"...roger that."
And right before Michelle's eyes, four other girls materialized in a wave. One girl, dressed in frills and pink screamed. "AHHH! EMI!" She clung onto another girl, one with thick rimmed glassed, and pig tails.
Emily frowned, still keeping Michelle behind her. "Emma, hurry up! We can't reform without you!"
Emma didn't respond, but the creature did:
"Die."
And it lunged straight for Michelle. The quiet girl screamed, shuting her eyes tightly as she threw her palms towards the gray thing, and thought, I don't want to die!
"MICHELLE!"
At the sound of Ashley's horrified voice, Michelle cracked her eye open. To her surprise, a disfigured tongue, and hundreds of teeth poking every which way. She didn't move her palms, frozen. The animal's eyes were staring out into space.
Mrs. Schooss immediately ran to her daughter, holding her tightly. "Michelle! Oh, my baby, are you all right? Did it hurt you?"
Michelle took a few a few steps back before falling onto the ground. "I-I-I... I'm fine, Mama. I'm fine."
The mother's eyes softened in pure relief, as she whispered, "Oh, thank you Lord..." And hugged her before glaring at the animal. She glanced at the eyes, and switched to Emily, "What happened here."
Emily was about to answer when Emma came running in. "I'm here!"
Then the six identical women phased into one. A slight glow gave away she had mended together, her eyes and open mouth shining a soft white. When it stopped, and she took a breath, Emily opened hazel eyes, and said, "I... don't know. All I saw was that Level 4 lunging at Michelle and I, and then a blue light..." she looked at Michelle, then whispered, "that felt like mist..."
Michelle looked at her palms, and realized they were slightly wet. She closed her hands into a fist, then looked into the creatures eyes.
"I will kill you," she whispered, and the yellow-eyed animal was sent running in fear.
