And it's not like he's a typical homeless guy. Not the alarming, kinda frightening, scraggly, dirty kind. That isn't the problem at all. Indeed, he rarely has trouble finding someone who will let him use their house to wash up, or even let him stay the night. Pretty cunning and resourceful, actually. One who has observed him enough might even call it manipulative.

But it's mostly that, from day one, there has been something just slightly unsettling about him to me. He's charming and flattering in that uncomfortable, disconcerting way. And really, this is a guy who is smart enough and able-bodied enough that really he shouldn't have a problem finding work and getting back on his feet. Whatever circumstances there were that left him without a place of his own to live, it's been a while. But he's just so damn good at making friends and making them want to help him. Perhaps he finds it more convenient that way. I became casual friends with him while he was staying with my neighbor friend, who incidentally ended up kicking him out for various reasons. We'll just say that he abused her kindness.

I didn't find out about that last bit until very recently. I haven't had any problem being casual friends with him, but I never have quite trusted or been comfortable with him enough that I would at all want to be closer friends with him.

And now, unfortunately, he has my number (how do you tell somebody you're kinda/sorta friends with that you don't want them to have your number?) and left a voicemail asking me to come to this coffee house show on Valentine's Day, hiding behind his cover of "he'll be working," throwing my roommate into the invitation, and adding that I could bring a date if I wanted. But it has been confirmed that he's actually been interested ever since we met.

I need to find a single guy friend with nothing to do Saturday night...
