Chapter 7
Saeran had never traveled this far before in his life, nothing could stop his constant complaints at this point. Kiera, on the other hand, seemed to be feeling nothing, “At this rate we should reach Tybard in about a week and a half,” Kiera seemed to read his mind. Both of them trudged through creeks that branched off the Rolongo river and over small cliffs. Occasionally Kiera would help Saeran up, but most of the time she just let him fall several times before he made it up.

Saeran and Kiera walked into an open, tree-less area. “Uh, Kiera?” Saeran stammered.

“Huh?”

“I was thinking, you seem to fight very well, maybe you could train me.”

“What?!” Kiera burst out laughing. “Me? Train you? I thought you were supposed to be an amazing fighter yourself.”

“Well, I can only fight people with the same weapon as me,” he pulled out his sword.

“No offense but my dagger could slice right through that thing you call a sword. Rapiers are very flimsy weapons.”

“Yeah I know, that’s why I need your help, so I can fight against multiple types of weapons.”

Kiera gave him a funny look, “Multiple types? Three things, one: fighters don’t talk like that. Two: I could only teach you how to fight against a dagger, and three: you only need to worry about two different types.”

“Two?” Saeran was a bit confused.

“Yes, two, big and little.”

“I don’t get it, explain.”

“Well, bigger weapons tend to be pretty straight forward and brute strength. Smaller weapons tend to be faster and more evasive.”

“Okay, makes sense so far, go on.”

“It doesn’t really matter what kind of specific weapon one wields, they usually fight depending on the size of their weapon,” Kiera explained.

“Wait, mine looks like a “big” weapon but I don’t use brute strength with it.”

“That’s because a rapier is really light-weight.”

“Oh, I never learned any of this at the palace.”

“I’m not surprised, most battle instructors are idiots that have never seen battle.”

“That’s probably true, but I’m not going to get much better just by hearing it. Do you think maybe we could have a practice battle?”

“I can’t fight you! You’d drop faster that a moth by a lantern,” Kiera chuckled.

“I…” Saeran started to protest, “Yeah you’re probably right, but that’s why I need your help. I want to be able to defend myself in a place where I actually need it.”

“Hmmm…” Kiera thought for a while, “Okay, I’ll go easy on you.” Both of them got set up a few yards away from each other. “This is just going to be like a normal battle, just to see what you’re up against. The first one to hit the ground loses. You can try to scratch me but nothing too serious.”

“Of course not,” Saeran finished checking his weapon and looked up. “Whoa!” Kiera was coming at him! As quick as he could, he jumped out of the way. “What ever happened to ready, set, go!?!” he shouted.

“This is battle, there is no go!” Kiera came charging at him again. This time Saeran guided her dagger away with his sword.

“Ha!” he rose both of his arms in the air. Not a second later pain ripped at his side, “Aargh!” Blood was on both Kiera’s dagger and his side. “What was that for!?!”

“You let your guard down,” she stated as she pushed him down with one hand, “You’re dead.” After a moment of watching his awestruck face she helped him up. “Now do you see why the messenger picked me?” Saeran nodded without saying a word. “Remember, if you just dodge they’ll keep coming after you. You have to anticipate your opponents attacks, dodge them and counter them.”

“Okay but how am I going to block your dagger, you said yourself that you could slice it in two whenever you wanted.”

“That’s true, and also why I said dodge, not block. Get ready, we’ll go again.” They both stepped back. Saeran was the one to charge first this time, but all too soon Kiera grabbed his wrist and flipped him over her head to the ground. “Never be to anxious to rush your opponent. Some of the greatest warriors never attack first.”

“You couldn’t just tell me all this at the beginning?!” Saeran complained from the ground.

“Oops,” she remarked with not a drop of regret looking down at him. “One more thing, your sword isn’t your only weapon, your left hand and both feet are free to attack too.”

This time their practice battle lasted a lot longer. For about the first minute Kiera and Saeran just circled each other watching for any sign of hostility. Kiera charged, but instead of jumping out of the way, Saeran grabbed her wrist and swung her around to where she began. She came again, Saeran jumped a little bit out of the way and swiped his sword at her back and got her back just enough to draw some blood. Kiera decided to be more strategic, instead of coming at him as fast as she could, she came at him looking like she would plunge the dagger into his gut, but then she brought her fist forward and knocked the wind out of him. Saeran fell to his knees and dropped his sword. Kiera got ready to punch again but just as her fist came down, he looked up and swung her behind him. In one swift motion he stuck one foot out, spun around, stood up and swept Kiera off her feet. Saeran looked down at the girl in front him. “Now you’re dead,” he imitated.

“So I may be,” she got up, completely ignoring Saeran’s outstretched hand. “But most battlefields won’t be this perfect, you’ll need to learn to use your surroundings to your advantage. Unfortunately that isn’t something that I can teach you, you’ll have to figure that out on your own.” They started walking again. “I will admit, you have talent.” Saeran smiled, “but that’s not enough,” his smile faded. Kiera continued, “You need practice, and lots of it. Not on real people though.”

“Of course not, that would just be senseless killing,” Saeran agreed.

Kiera looked away, “yeah.”

Hehe, I liked that fight xd And THAT is what you get when you get a little too full of yourself--you get sliced in the side by a maniacal criminal. =3 Lol, I'm looking forward to reading more and finding out who the villain really is. I wonder if my assumption was correct?

    YAY!
    I love it! Amazing! 3nodding
I caught a typo or two like...I think "rapiers" near the beginning (paragraph 7 I think) should be capitalized. Nothing that takes away from the amazingness though. blaugh
Write more! I will look forward to reading. biggrin
