life is wonderful...most of the time
Prologue

Nyte ran, his lungs burning a hole in his side as he did so. The midnight moon shown full and bright leading his way. But in his state, it could be dark as death with fire shooting from the ground, and he could still find his way. Sweat beaded at the tips of his fur dripping like a broken faucet as he ran. Thunder rolled over head, and he could smell rain in the air. A snarl ripped through his chest. He ran even faster listening to the sound of his paws thump against the ground in time with his heart. Thu bump thu bump. Fear was steadily growing as he ran.
Nyte was strong. He knew that, and the moon helped him. But he didn’t know if he was strong enough to lose somebody else close to him. To the hands of the same man, the same killer that led the raid on his family. He ran still faster as the image flashed through his head. His home burning to the ground in front of him. Vampires running around, to many to fend off. To many to count. He was young, only a small child not yet grown into his wolf form let alone his teenage years. He remembered shaking his head that they made him stand and watch as his family was killed along with the rest of his village.
He shook his head. Right now was not the time to be having childhood memories as few and painful as they were. The trees flew by him at an amazing speed as rain began to beat heavily. Thunder rolled heavily again mixing with his growl. The clearing was just up ahead. He would make it, find it was just a joke, and that bloodsucking monster didn’t have the only person in the world he still cared about. The only person in the world that cared about him.
He let instinct take over as the rain washed away any hope he had of a scent. He could see things come into better focus. Anger weld up in him as if it had been hiding. Now it was ready to burst killing anything that stopped him or got in his way. His ears stood up and each drop of rain echoed in them. The woods smelt fresh and more alive then he could remember. He was alive. He wanted to hunt to rip something with his teeth and feel his prey being chewed between his teeth. He wanted to kill.
The fur on his body bristled in anger and anticipation. He remembered the first time he felt like this. It had scared him. He was afraid he would lose control and hurt somebody near him. That was the last thing he wanted, but he couldn’t help it. Nobody was there to guide him, to help him work through it and tell him what to do. All he knew was to let his instinct take over. And so he did. He was hunting, and that filthy vampire was his prey.
