hey guys, had the evening to myself so i got some typing done!
Chapter 38: Playing with Fire
“How could they stoop so ******** low? A bounty hunter?! I was actually starting to like Melissa!” Ashley fumed.
“Team Lamis has nothing to do with this! Those two have no idea that their city hired me! Breathe easy on that,” Torch assured us.
“Then we fight to protect their good names!” I declared firing the arrow. With a simple snap of Torch’s fiery fingers, it was disintegrated in a shower of sparks.
“Dyron, you won’t be doing much fighting! Your weapons are no match against a master Mage such as myself!” Torch laughed. Sadly he was right. Though I’d been given a fresh set of arrows in the previous week, I’d already lost one in no time.
Star was terrified. Her heart was pounding in her ears and her hands were shaking uncontrollably. “Don’t worry, baby! We’ll take care of him!” she said suddenly not caring about anything but protecting her two friends. Especially Dyron! She and Ashley rushed towards Torch and simultaneously attacked him with ice.
He raised a fist to each of them and their ice was subject to sublimation, instantly turning to steam. “No good!” Ashley shouted to Star. She nodded in agreement and as if reading each other minds, both switched to fire and lifted their legs, which propelled them backwards. This allowed them to gain some distance and quickly think of a new a plan.
“You’re a bunch of amateurs! This is easy for money!” Torch taunted. It hurt to watch my two closest friends get their asses handed to them while I could do nothing but sit back and watch.
I shouted desperately, “Girls! Please retreat! We gotta make a run for it!” My attempts for running were all for naught. Both Star and Ashley at this point, had too much pride to back down. They felt they had to do everything in their power to protect the boy they loved most. They could do nothing but painstakingly ignore my frantic pleas.
Torch had the girls on the ropes. Nothing they threw at him was working! They just couldn’t get close to him! And that was the weak spot. It was a basic rule of Demox specialty: If a Battle can get within striking range of a Mage, the Mage is in a bad position. Mage’s are trained in hand-to-hand combat, but not as good as Battles. Torch had no formal training as a Demox, and that left him even more open than most. Once Star discovered this and knew that she had to get this message to me as fast as she could.
She boosted herself backwards with two bursts of fire, leaving Ashley to fend for herself. Torch gave chase and in this case, his speed was superior. He used this same technique almost daily and was now hovering with his back to me. “You can’t save your boyfriend now! His life is in my very hands!” he said with an arrogant smile.
His back was to me! Torch really was an arrogant b*****d! He was so involved talking s**t to my girlfriend that he forgot all about the ‘helpless Battle behind him! I’ll show him! I silently pulled out three arrows, string them in the bow, and pulled back as far as it would allow. “If you seriously think you’ll get away with talking s**t about Star and living, you are sadly mistaken, a*****e!!” I said letting the arrows fly and sink into his back.
He turned and let out an agonizing scream and cursed at me, ready to rain hellfire. Star saw that his body was burning the wooden shafts, but not the steels heads. “Don’t you ever underestimate any of us! Especially my Dyron!” Star calmly told him. She raised her hand over his body and sent an arc of lightning through the steel arrowheads lodged in Torch’s body, electrocuting him into an unconscious, or possibly dead, bounty hunter. I didn’t want to check.
Ashley watched the whole scene and when it was all over dashed, and tackled the both of us, truly elated that we were both unharmed. “Let’s go in case he’s alive. We need to put some distance between us and that possible corpse.”
