Alrighty! I'm going to attempt to explain my process of vertical halfatar creation in the least confusing way possible. Here goes!
1. First off, I look at the items I have and find one or two that are placed on one side of the avatar only. It's easier said than done, and half the time I end up going in a completely different direction. But you have to start somewhere, right?
2. I decide on a general idea of what my two halves are going to be, taking into account what items I have that will do the following:
-work with my color schemes
-be on the correct side of the avatar for that scheme
-OR they can be covered up where they don't quite fit the vertical split
My general idea at this point is to have a silver side with red accents, and then the other side will be different shades of green.
3. I run around in my inventory and the marketplace, just adding more and more items. Look at the bottom of this post for a list of handy items and poses for vertical avatars. <3 
4. Sometimes a color scheme needs to be revised or added to, either for that extra pizazz, flow, or just to make it a tad easier to make the split work.
5. Refinement! Every little detail counts, and the more obvious you can make the line down the middle separating the halves, the better.
Other tips:
-Don't disregard an item just because it equips to both sides and therefore 'won't work in a vertical split'. There are ways of making it work! For example, Wed to Darkness horns can be covered on one side with the White Streak from the Ren Doll.
-If you decide to do two colors on each side, don't use the same 'secondary color' on each side unless you make it really obvious what you're doing. If you have a red and gold half against a blue and gold half, it can make things less clear-cut.
-Step back from your monitor every so often and just look at everything from a distance. Is the contrast and division clear-cut? Does anything stick out or 'leak' over to the wrong side?
-Skins are your friend. If you can cover one side with items galore, using a skin on the other side and just letting that color show through can save you quite the headache.
Item Suggestions by Color and Location
Note: These will be mostly for females, as I have a female avatar and haven't tried making a halfatar on a male avatar. 'Left' will be considered the side that is on YOUR left as you look at your avatar in the Dressing Room.
Keep in mind that nearly every item can be worked into a halfatar somewhere! These are just ideas that could get you started.
Bolded items are ones that really work awesomely in vertical halfatars.
