It was a short drive to Nikole’s apartment, short but very stressful. Nikole noticed long before she got into the car that Amanda had started to follow her. She didn’t mind, but didn’t feel like seeing or talking to Amanda at the moment, or any other time for that matter. Cutting the ignition, Nikole jumped out of her car and up to the front door, leaving it open once she was through. She knew Amanda would want to come in. And she did just that.
Amanda looked around, observing every little object in sight.
“Plain and small, kind of boring, even for you.” Amanda said.
“If you haven’t noticed, I live alone. So, I don’t care if it’s too boring to others, it’s my house, my sanctuary. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ve got paper work to do, so keep it quiet.” Nikole seated herself at a small desk in the corner of the living room. Sitting herself down, she grabbed a pair of reading glasses and started writing on a large manila folder.
“If you don’t mind me asking, what is that?” Amanda’s curiosity perked up. She walked over to Nikole and looked over her shoulder. Nikole shrugged.
“Paper work, being the supervisor gives me a lot more responsibility, and less alone time to collect my thoughts.” Nikole never lifted her eyes from the words on the paper.
“What kind of case was this one?”
“Uh,” Nikole flipped through some of the loose papers, “Homicide, a husband killed his ex because he found out she cheated on him when they were still married. Dumbass didn’t clean up anything so it was a straight shot case.” Amanda pulled her eyes away from the paper and started to move around again. She noticed a large book case with several poetry novels. The main author, Edgar Allan Poe.
“I see you still love your Poe.” Amanda pulled one book from the shelf, admiring it. The Cask Of Amontillado.
“Mhmmm.” Nikole’s eyes were still glued to the paper. Amanda started to get furious.
“Is this a one bedroom apartment?” She asked.
“Uh, yes it is.” Nikole was still not looking at her.
“I’m sleeping with you tonight then.” Nikole’s head shot up. She turned quickly to face Amanda.
“What?!?”
“What? Do you expect me to sleep on the couch? Pfft, you’ve got another thing coming that’s for sure.”
“No, I wasn’t expecting you to STAY.” Fear was in Nikole’s eyes.
“Well, guess what, I am, and there’s nothing you can do about it.” With that, Amanda turned toward the single bedroom and once inside, she slammed the door shut.
