I could remember that day like it was just yesterday. Nice sunny Autumn day. A cool, crisp breeze. Pretty good day at school, no homework. Walking home from school usually took me a good twenty minutes. Turn two corners, walk past that creepy old mansion and right at the end would be my two story house. But that day, I didn’t walk past that old mansion. It was like something had called me into there. Like I had seen the same thing happen many years ago.
I had just stood there staring. For some reason it sounded like whispers coming from there. I thought it was some kids doing graffiti. So I had started to walk away. But when I walked away the whispers had gotten louder, I stopped. Turned my head at the mansion, thought it was the kids. But as soon as I started walking even farther, there weren’t any whispers anymore. There were screams. I covered my ears. The screams were loud, so loud I thought I was going to go deaf. The screams got even louder, I opened my eyes and looked around without turning my head. Nothing. No one. The streets were empty, no one in there houses. I turned to the mansion, no one was in there either. Or was there? I ran over to the mansion with my hands still cupped to my ears. When I started to get closer I found that the screams became the whispers, and the whispers to a soft hum. I reached the giant doors of the old mansion to find that everything was silent. Not a car horn, or a birds chirp. I was frightened. What‘s going on? I thought.
I placed my ear to the huge doors to hear the soft hum again, I backed away frantically. I walked back slowly until I found the beginning of the sidewalk. Once I got there I ran, ran all the way back to my house. I looked to find that my parents were there. I panted hard, then sighed with relief. What had happened near that mansion made me ponder for the rest of the day. I didn’t have an appetite for dinner, and stayed up all night with that stuck in my head. When I thought of the screams and humming a closed my eyes tight and shivered uncontrollably.
