The boy unsheathed his dagger and flew towards the great bird with a ferocity that no other being on earth could possibly obtain. The raven felt his might from behind and swung her mighty ruffled neck about to peer upon him with her piercing red eyes.
After leaping into the canopy with a blaze of feathers, she crooned, "Have you no intelligence my boy?" She cawed and flapped higher into the air scornfully. "Apparently
your sense of judgement has been impaired since last i saw you!"
"Since last you saw me? Ha! If we would have met before this, your head would already be on my mantle!" he scoffed with pride. He dropped his rusted dagger, and took out his equally weathered bow, already with a pointed arrow on its aim. "Now prepare to fall, beast!"
The Raven craned it's head up in a tearing caw that seemed, to the boy, to be the Raven form of laughter. He pouted, still with his arrow pointed at the flapping, black target.
"Why do you laugh at the face of my arrow? Do you have a death wish after all?"
She merely cackled and screeched, "I'm sorry! I just find it odd that you'd kill your own kin!"
"My own kin? you appear to be a bird in every way! explain yourself or die!"
The shaded raven landed and folded her mighty wings. She peered around the harsh, wind-swept land, and began to change. The boy watched in a curious fear as her once raggedy feathers and talons morphed into a flowing dress. Her wings twisted and her feathers fell back until he could see not wings, but arms gracefully tipped in hands. He could only tremble and gasp.
"Is this explanation enough?" she breathed. The raven was now a woman clothed in a dark and patched dress that flapped in the wind. She was not young, but her wrinkles only framed her beauteous face.
The boy dropped his arrow, then his bow, and then he dropped a tear. He was sobbing uncontrollably, for he recognized the raven ladies face.
"M-mother..? Is that you..?
