Because my cabin did not include any sort of porthole for me to look outside, I waited until I was pretty sure everyone was asleep before I quietly snuck out of my cabin and onto the bridge. Curling up in one of the flight chairs, I gazed out the window.
"I figured you might be up here," someone said from behind me.
Spinning around, I saw Montana in the doorway of the bridge. "You scared me."
Sitting down in the other flight chair, Montana said, "Considering all that's happened today, I am not too surprised. Can't sleep?"
"I've been asleep for a thousand years," I replied. "I'm pretty much well rested."
"Good point," Montana said.
After a few moments, I looked at Montana and said, "You're the only one on this ship that isn't freakish. Why?"
"Excuse me?" Montana asked, looking at me.
"It's a little freaky that your Kyle looks like the Kyle I knew. Albin has blue hair while Dugan, Beryl, and Shane--who're all younger than thirty at least--have gray hair. What's with the funky hair?"
"The cap, Beryl, Shane, and Albin are friends through circumstances they went through together in their childhoods," Montana said.
"And...?"
"And the Zacharee Corporation used to run test on people that were taken off the street."
"You mean kidnapping."
"Yes. Anyway, the four of them were subjected to tests like they were labrats."
"What were the tests?"
"I don't know. I just know that they were a part of a group that had failed. A group that passed the tests was those you call the Fetish Trio."
"Those guys were the results of a SUCCESSFUL test?!"
"As were the Grims."
"How the hell are visible mutations successful? I thought genetic testing was going the way of the Nazi's regime: if Jim Bob doesn't look like Alexander Worthington, a couple of tweaks to the DNA strand will make the two twins!"
"Except that genetic mutations have proven to be handy in wartime combat," Montana said. "Their stamina surpassed that of someone without testing."
Tilting my head to the right, I said, "As interesting as that all is...buckle up."
"Doushita?" Montana asked.
"What?" I asked, flipping switches and grabbing the yoke. "Never mind, just hang on."
"IESUKIRISUTO!!" Montana exclaimed as the BluGem dipped down then soared upward.
"Chill," I said, banking the BluGem to the right. "I know what I'm doing...kind of."
"Kind of?! KIND OF?!" Montana shouted. "This is my baby girl you're piloting! CAN I SEE YOUR PILOT'S LICENSE?!"
"Either we were followed," I replied. "Or we've been found."
"Sumimasen?" Dugan asked, bracing himself in the door to the cabin. "Why are you flying my ship?"
"I'm saving our asses," I replied. "There's another ship behind us with a cloaking device."
"Are you kureejii?" Dugan asked. "Cloaking devices don't exist!"
"I am not...whatever kureejii is!" I said. "Come on! It's 3006, why can't cloaking devices exist?!"
"They just don't!" Montana replied. "I know every piece of technology that comes out nearly six hours after its released and cloaking things do not exist!"
A large ship materialized out of thin air in front of us. Pushing the yoke forward, I said, "I'd check my sources if I were you."
"That's the HelSpawn!" Dugan growled. "How the jigoku did they do that?!"
"Told you cloaking devices exist," I replied. The BluGem suddenly shuddered from an explosion near one of the engines. "Montana, go check the engines! Dugan, do you have any weapons or shields on this crate?"
"No," Dugan replied, as Montana hurried away. Taking her seat, he added, "The HelSpawn shouldn't even have them. Her class is the same as the BluGem's class--transport."
"Well hell," I said. After a moment, I asked, "Where's Kyle?"
"Here," Kyle replied, stepping into the cabin just as the BluGem rocked with another hit.
"I take it you're the pilot so pilot," I said, unbuckling from the chair.
"What are you doing?" Dugan asked.
"You stay here," I said. "Kyle's going to need help controlling the ship when I get working."
"Working on what?" both Kyle and Dugan asked.
"You'll see," I replied, leaving the cabin.
"Where are you going?" Beryl asked.
"Where are the, um, whatchamcallits," I asked, snapping my fingers. "The bio suits that can be used in space?"
"Space suits?" Beryl replied. "They're over here by the external hatch."
"They're seriously called space suits?" I asked. "I thought there was a more technical term for them."
"Montana'll tell you it's called a pressure garment assembly," Beryl said. "But we aren't all mechanical geeks now are we?"
Laughing, I replied, "No, we aren't."
"You still haven't said what you're going to be doing," Beryl said as I began to put on the space suit.
"I'm going to be saving us," I replied, stumbling as the ship took another hit. "One more hit like that and I don't think that the BluGem will survive."
"And just what do you think you can do?"
"Something."
"What?"
"I don't know."
"So we're doomed?"
"There's a fifty-fifty chance."
"Great."
"It's better than knowing we stand no chance."
"Good point."
Before she let me go onto the surface of the ship, Beryl had explained all the techno-geek stuff I would need to know to avoid flying off the surface of the ship on accident. Tying myself to the ship, I saw the HelSpawn so close behind us that I could see Rorin, Ian, Rella, and some girl with pink bao hair staring at me through the class of the cabin.
Taking a deep breath, I raised my arms and felt a sudden surge of power as a semi- translucent bubble began to cover the BluGem. However, before the bubble could completely cover the ship and myself, the HelSpawn shot a harpoon towards me.
"Oh hell no," I said seconds before it slammed through my stomach.
Flying out of my back, I heard a c***k! sound as the point of the harpoon exploded into a + and pulled tight against my back. There was a moment where the rope tying me to the BluGem pulled tight where I thought I would be ripped in half, but the rope snapped and I was pulled towards the HelSpawn.
