DEMOX: ch. 49
Chapter 49: Can We Finish??

Another day had come. We hadn’t stopped walking since we started yesterday. Many times we really wanted to, and many times we needed to, but our minds being stronger than our bodies ignored that fact.

About mid-morning, we came to the end of the fork in the road. The three paths had merged to make one again. We even found the energy to do some jogging. The three of us knew that we were so close to the finish, that stopping was out of the question.

Suddenly, there was the faint sound of running and hollering in the distance. The thought of stopping never crossed my mind, but I did look back. It was Team Lamis! Their words were indistinct at first because of their distance from and trying to yell over each other. Once they got closer, there was no need for explanation.

Small, speedy quakes and a deafening roar were all I need to know that our old friend, the cyclops had returned. All of us kicked it into high gear and ran for our lives. There was no sign of Kratias at all. Had the worst happened? No, this was not the time to think that way!

I stopped. I dropped everything that was not a weapon and unleashed my chain scythe. “Why are we running?! Have we forgotten who we are? We are Demox! Feared warriors and destroyers of demons! This is no different than any other we’ve faced! Let’s stand here proud and tall! Let’s band together…and FIGHT!!” I screamed attacking the fierce monster.

The blade sailed through the air and it curved, slicing the beasts arm. I quickly pulled it back and rolled of the way of his giant arm smashing into the ground. A bolt of lightning zipped past me and hit him square in the chest, knocking him down. It was my faithful girlfriend! “Let’s ******** this thing up, Dyron!” she smiled.

The cyclops struggled back to its feet and charged at us on all fours but everyone evaded him. I was closest to him so he attempted to stomp me into the dust. My katana met the bottom of his foot, blood gushing out like a fountain of water.

The demon howled again and reared back. Melissa joined the fray, firing an onslaught of arrows at its eye once it opened again. She had the same idea as me, but unlike me, she hit the mark! “I got him!” she laughed. It tried to pull the arrows out, but they were lodged too deep.

“Way to go, Melissa!” Tyler cheered. The other two girls moved in and dropped lightning on the hell spawn, taking him to the ground once more, but still it did not die! He rose again, partially blind and confused, and went on another tantrum raising a terrible calamity.

“We need Kratias! We need Curstan and Nathan!” Ashley shouted. This was true. Curstan’s speed would most definitely help, as well as Nathan’s magic power. The five of us dodged the beast desperately as it continued to thrash about in its blind fury.

God must’ve truly been watching over us, for just as seraphim descend from the very heavens, Kratias appeared like a bolt out of the blue! That thought revolving in mind head, Nathan attacked with lightning aimed for the cyclops’ head. He missed and avoided a kick that would’ve ended him. The duo made their way over to us, avoiding danger along the way. For now, it was not focused on us.

“We need to take out that eye!” Curstan said.

“Melissa got a few arrows in there! That’s why he’s so pissed off now!” I explained.

“Then let’s finish the job!” Nathan concluded. He spun a chain and launched a fireball. The demon smacked away. That didn’t stop Nathan, though! He just picked up the pace and used both chains, and switched up elements. Eventually, Star and Ashley joined Nathan in one simultaneous flamethrower. The fire was seriously intense and exploded on contact with the enemy.

There was no way the cyclops could avoid this one! The flames consumed him and as they did, his eye was being melted out its socket. This time, he was determined not to fall. The Mages held their attack as I took the chance to get in close. I ran behind him and cast off the chain scythe and it wrapped around his neck! Blood spurted from his neck as the blade pierced his throat. I yanked, pulled, and tugged trying to bring the beast down, but I was just too exhausted. Even if I was at full strength I couldn’t have. Just as I was about to give up, warm hands rested on top of mine. It was Star! She’d gotten in front of me and started to help me pull! Still, it wasn’t enough. I wrapped the chain around my arms, Star still helping. Soon, Curstan and Tyler joined us. Nathan and Melissa were firing at its face as Ashley was making a patch of ice for it slip and fall on.

The plan worked! Combining our power, the beast finally went into shock and fell, never to rise again. Finally, as all dead demons do, it disintegrated back into the depths of hell from whence it came. We all quiet as we took time to gather our things and heal each other. “Everyone ok?” I asked, breaking the silence.

“No! I wanna go home! To Neravien!” Star cried. Tears streaked her face and she latched onto me, the fear and shock of everything that had just happened was setting in. We were all so busy trying to survive; we had no time to think about fear or anything like that.

“It’s ok, baby. It’s all over now, love!” I whispered kissing her forehead. I cradled her in her arms a little longer until she calmed down. “All right guys! Let’s go!” I called starting to walk.

“Wait, Dyron!” Tyler stopped us. I turned around, a questioning look on my face. “Melissa and I have talked it over. We think Team Neravien should win! You have worked the hardest out of everyone else for this! You’ve won both your matches with flying colors!” he said.

I looked at Curstan and Nathan. They worked just as hard as anyone else. Then they looked at each other. Finally, there seemed to be an unspoken mutual agreement among them and Curstan spoke. “We vote for Neravien too. Second’s just fine with me!”

“Yes, and Lamis will gladly take third,” Melissa said, with Tyler nodding.

Star hugged and smiled, “Let’s go, honey!” We walked together for most of the day. There was but a mile left on our journey home.

“Ok everyone, there’s a mile left and it’s pretty much a straight shot from here. Let’s make this look convincing, huh?” What was I planning?
