A jet black vehicle cruised along the freeway. The vehicle could not be described by any brand name like Toyota - it looked to be custom made. The powerful car weaved in and out of the traffic, cruising at a hurried speed; however, it did so with grace and ease making it seem an easy feat to an outsider as they watched from outside their car window at the magnificent device whizz by with a loud hum; however, while to the outside the picture seemed serene and peaceful, inside it was complete havoc. "HOW THE HECK DO I GET THIS THING TO SLOW DOWN?! WAHHH! DAMNIT!" The teenage boy cried out, quickly swerving the wheel to the right as he looked up and realized he was about to crash into a pickup truck. The boys frame was stiff and rigid and he looked as if he could have vommitted right then and there. His foot was off the gas and was pressing down on the brakes; however, it was to no avail.
Rewinding about two hours earlier..
Shane Grayson hopped into the batmobile. "So this is it, huh.. ? Wow! Well this sure beast my collectors edition model number-" "Shane." "Right, sorry." The boy rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly at the scolding. The man leaning against the window was none other than Bruce Wayne - one of the most respected men in Gotham City. Moments ago, Shane had found out that he was also one of the most cherished heroes - none other than Batman himself. "It's alright, but Shane.. we're all counting on you. You're our only hope." The man's eyes peirced through Shane's, as if they could see right through him. Shane nodded and cracked a smile. "Don't worry. Leave it to me - I won't let you down, Bruce." Bruce Wayne cast a heartfelt smile at the boy - his godson - before his face became serious and he pulled out a small bat-shaped device, handing it to Shane. "Here - a communicator so we can stay in touch." Shane eagerly took the device, a goofy smile on his face. "Sick!" Bruce pointed towards a small, green button which stood out from the rest. Next to the green button was a red one, yellow one, and a blue one as well.
"I'm going to go through this very quickly, Shane, so pay close attention - these four buttons are extremely important." He paused, making sure the boy was listening. Shane nodded and Bruce continued, "I'll start with this green one; you'll probably need it along the way. If you find you need more speed this button will rev up the engine and accellerate you faster. The blue one you can use for defensive purposes. It will give you invisibility in case the cops start to tail you for a speeding offense or someone is following you. The yellow one you can use for offensive combat - it will shoot small missiles at your target from either the front or behind - just say it out loud and it will do it's job. And as for this one ..." After pointing at the yellow and blue buttons he paused for a moment at the red one, looking up into Shane's eyes, with a deathly serious face plastered on. "Don't ever touch this button unless it is an absolute emergency. Do I make myself clear?" Shane blinked, a bit taken aback by the seriousness of Bruce's tone. He recovered quickly though grinned, giving a thumbs up sign. "Crystal. Now let's do this!" Bruce's stare lingered before he nodded in satisfaction. "Alright, well here you go then.. "
Bruce held out the keys to Shane who eagerly grabbed them, putting them into the ignition and starting up the car before turning to his godfather and giving a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, I'll bring them back, I promise..no matter what." Bruce nodded and stood back as he watched Shane begin to pull the car foward, out of the Batcave. "Be safe.." He breathed after him.
Fastforwarding back to present time...
"WHOAAAAA!!!!" Shane cried out, swerving to the left this time, narrowly avoiding a large SUV. A woman rolled down her window, angrily, shaking her fist and yelling something; however, Shane couldn't make it out since he was already miles in front of her. "Green button will help to accellerate you blablabla .. stupid Batman conveniently forgot to tell me how to stop this damned thing." Shane grumbled, eyes frantically scouring the dashboard for any kind of switch that might prove helpful to him; just then, he heard sirens. Shane gulped and looked in his rearview mirror to see several police cars tailing him. Shane cursed under his breathe. "Now what?!" Shane looked down, once again, frantically searching for a button that might prove useful to him. His eyes eventually found the blue button Bruce had told him about earlier. Shane looked back in his rearview mirror before pressing the blue button. "Sorry guys, I've got a planet to save." One by one, the police cars slowed down, the drivers looking baffled as the car they'd been chasing suddenly dissapeared into thin air.
Meanwhile, Shane sped on. "Damnit, come on - there has to be a way to slow down this thing. Maybe if I try hitting the button again..? Ughh, but what if that makes it go faster!?! Damnit." Shane cursed under his breathe. You might be wondering at this point how Shane had gotten himself into this situation. Well, if you were in his position and your parents were being held hostage along with the rest of Earth's greatest superheroes at the Justice League's headquarters by some evil villains son seeking vengeance and world domination then you might be a tad bit impatient too. Needless to say, Shane could use all the speed he could get so he naively put the gas on and hit the green button and after that it was FULL SPEED AHEAD! While he'd gained quite an advantage using the super accelleration button there was also a more likely chance of a possible accident which would slow Shane down even further.
Shane's eyes widened. "Wait a minute!" Shane reached down with one hand to his backpocket where he pulled out the bat communicator. "How do I get this thing to-AHA! A button!" Shane exclaimed, feeling a black button on the back. He pressed it down and began to talk into it frantically. "HELLO!?! BRUCE, CAN YOU HEAR ME?!" "Shane, you've called me so soon?! What's going on?!" Bruce's panicked voice came on the other line, much to Shane's delight. "Nono! I'm fine.. well.. not really.. I mean that is, how do I slow this thing down?! I've been trying to figure it out for hours now and it's getting hard to keep dodging in and out of all these CARS!!! AHHHH!" Shane dropped the communicator and swerved to the left again just in time. "SHANE?! Is everything alright?! Shane, can you hear me?!" Shane exhaled, a sigh of relief before slowly leaning down to pick up the communicator again. "Right.. sorry about that. Anyways, yeah, how do I slow this thing down? I hit the green button." Bruce chuckled. "Impatient, huh? Well last time I used it I had it on the highest setting." 'Of course..' Shane thought to himself, eyebrow twitching in annoyance. "To turn it down a notch just hit the button again and it should come down to normal." "Right. Okay, thanks. Over and out ~" Shane replied, throwing the communicator to the seat next to him.
Shane pushed the green button and sure enough the vehicle had taken it down a notch, although it was still accellerating faster than a normal car could. "Whew~ " Shane let out a deep exhale, his shoulders untenseing and his grip on the wheel lessening. Initially he'd thought playing hero would be fun. I mean, how hard could it be? Especially when you had all those cool superhero gizmos and gadgets they all had on TV or in comic books?! Unfortunately for Shane, he was finding out quickly that things weren't quite as easy as they appeared. 'Looks like I'm in a little over my head.' Shane thought to himself, glancing over at the GPS - his eyes widened as he saw that according to the time estimator he only had, "ONLY ONE HOUR?! HOLY s**t!" Shane cried out. Just how fast had he been going?!!?!?! Shane shivered slightly, a bit overwhelmed by the thought. He quickly shook himself out of the shock though, a serious expression crossing his face. Either way it mattered not - the main point was that he'd made good time and would be arriving soon.
An hour later ...
"R-E-S-P-E-C-T TELLL ME WHAT YOU MEAN TO ME~" Shane sung along with the radio, his head bobbing from side to side, his fingers tapping against the wheel in rhythm to the beat. He'd started to feel drowsy so he'd cranked up the radio, blasting it so that he wouldn't fall asleep at the wheel. "R-E-S-P-E-CITY?!" Sure enough right in front of Shane was a sign reading "Welcome to Jump City!" A big grin spread across Shane's face. He was practically glowing. "Yes! Finally." Shane turned right on the exit and into Jump City. "Don't worry mom....dad.....I'll save you. I won't mess this up." Shane spoke in a soft whisper.
Shane was driving through the city. It was currently 7AM. He'd barely slept and he was sure he had bags under his eyes. Constant yawns were a sign that he needed some serious sleep - now. Barely even the tunes of Aretha Franklin could keep the young hero awake much longer. Unfortunately, he couldn't have that luxury - not when the entire planet was depending on him to save the world! "Ugh, where's the nearest Dunkin' Donuts for peats sake..." Shane grumbled in frusteration, eyes scanning the road for any Dunkin' Donuts or other coffee shop signs. Suddenly, his eyes lit up as he spotted a Honeydews at the corner coming up. "Thank God." Shane breathed out, relieved. He put his directional on and turned right into the drive-thru, rolling down his window. "MARK I TOLD YOU NEVER AGAIN T-Oh, hello ~ May I help you?" Shane raised his eyebrow as the person on the other line drastically changed her demeanor from barking to sugary sweet. "Um.. yeah, hi. Can I get a large coffee..... maybe a chocolate glazed to go with that?" Shane wasn't really hunry but he figured he would need all the strength he could get so he might as well. "Coming right up, dollface. Come on forward! NOW MARK I TOLD-....oops, teehee~" Shane sweatdropped before shaking his head and pulling up.
It seemed like forever before Shane's coffee and donut were ready. He was leaning back with his eyes closed, almost falling to sleep when all of a sudden the bursting of the drive-thru windows and a loud voice shouting, "SORRY THAT TOOK SO LONG, SUGA ~ ... eh?" Shane shot up, suprised and looked out his window to see the waitress looking from side to side in confusion. Shane raised an eyebrow. 'Weird lady..' He rolled down his window. "Hey.. um... right here?" Shane gave a little wave and a faint smile at the lady; however, her reaction was the opposite of what Shane was expecting. The lady gave out a scream, leaving the bag on the counter before running away shouting "GHOSTTTT!!! AHHHH!" Shane's eyes widened and he just gaped after her not quite knowing what had happened. It took him a minute but it finally hit him. "The invisibility defense is still on, argh! Shane how could you have been so stupid?!" Shane let his forehead hit the wheel in punishment, bringing his finger up to press the blue button turning it back on again just in time for another employee who had come over to hand him his food. "Here you go, sorry about my boss she's been a bit crazy these days.." Shane's eyes dropped down to look at the boys tag reading it as "Mark" as he took his food. "Right." Shane said, lifting an eyebrow.
Mark walked away and Shane got himself situated before he started to drive again. He was placing his coffee in the cupholder when all of a sudden he felt a vibration in his pocket. He pulled out his cell phone, pausing to look at it since no one was behind him. It was a forwarded message from one of his best friends - Cyborg. Shane raised an eyebrow as he read the message. "Another one?" He questioned. While his friend, Cyborg was a good friend to hangout with he also had an addiction to partying. Halloween was tomorrow so he was throwing a costume party at his house at 6. Usually, Shane wasn't much of a party boy; however, as Shane mulled it over he thought that it would be a good way to scout out the other kids of the previous Titans. "I suppose it couldn't hurt." Shane finally decided, texting his friend back:
TO: Cyborg FROM: Shane Count me in.
Shane hit 'send' and smiled. He was alarmed though as he heard a loud noise from behind him. He looked in his rearview mirror to see an angry old woman honking at him. "Whoops." Shane quickly put his phone back in his pocket before pulling away and out into the street. Perhaps in the meantime since he had so much time to spare it wouldn't hurt to head back home and take a quick nap. Having a sharp mind was a must and coffee could only do so much for him. Only a couple hours and then he'd get to his reading up on the other Titans and how to distinguish them.
Shane's house was only another block so it took him almost no time at all to pull into his driveway. Shane decided it would be a good idea to conceal his car and put it on invisible mode again so that the neighbors wouldn't be suspicious. He pressed the blue button before parking the car and heading out into the house with his coffee, donut, and bat communicator. Shane opened the backdoor, unlocked from their hurried leave yesterday. Shane stepped in and locked the door before heading inside his house. "I'm home..." he called out as he walked through the kitchen. Usually his mother would be home whipping up some pancakes right about now. His father would be sitting by the table flipping through the Daily Planet. Shane lingered a moment in the kitchen, the emptiness of it taking its toll, before he made his way upstairs to his bedroom.
Shane plopped down on his bed, face first. "Urgh..." He groaned into his pillow. He kicked his shoes off, turning his face to the side and reaching over to grab his alarm clock. He set it at 4'oclock. Two hours would give him enough time to study up and get ready for the party. In the meantime though...
Shane, not bothering to put on his pajamas or slide under his covers, turned on his side and closed his eyes.
He'd sleep.
