The main thing to remember is that a sorceress is not a witch and vice versa. A sorceress uses her powers in a more proactive and demanding manner than a witch. She will almost never ask for something to fly through the air toward her. She will instead exert her mind over the object and cause it to fly toward her. She tells it to leap off the desk and into her hands. A witch will use an incantation to cause the object to fly across the room.

The same thing happens in the case of conjuring. A sorceress needs only to think quite hard about the element she wishes to conjure and it appears where she wishes. A witch asks the element via an spell or incantation, to appear.

A witch will use tools, such as a wand or a pile of ingredients. A sorceress needs only her mind and so very rarely uses tools.

Witches and sorceresses are of the same species originally and so it is possible for a sorceress or a witch to use the others power, but as these things are taught from birth, that rarely happens.

There are male counterparts to both witches and sorceresses. These are the warlock and the sorcerer. The males are brought up alongside their sisters and so use the same types of magic.

Ideological differences caused the split between sorcerers and witches. No one remembers what they used to call themselves when they were one people. Predictably though, it was a pair of sisters that caused the split. One thought that their natural ability to control the world around them meant they should do just that. The other felt that asking the permission of that world was the better idea. The sisters fought and eventually separated, forming the sorcerer clans and the witch clans.

Sorcerers feel that witches are inferior because they ask for things to happen rather than just making them happen. Also, there is the speed factor. Using a spell or reciting an incantation take more time and therefore can get the witch killed. Sorcerers naturally took on the roles of Hunters. Making the world around them safer for their children and the humans they felt responsible for. Witches took on roles of healers, fortune tellers, village wise men or women. Roles that let them take the time with their spells, incantations, and potions without endangering their lives.
