Writing Exercise 7
In the mist of morning, witches chanted nonchalantly to prepare for this day. It was friday the thirteenth, the day in which the demon of fear roamed the earth for his day of fun in scaring fragile witches to their death. The chant was a protection spell. One that would help them to prepare for their fears and conquer it.
Of all witches Tira's fear was the deepest. She sat there, taking in the smell of the lavender candles burning, and the faint meow of her familiar which grew fainter and fainter as the spell sucked her in. Her breath drew heavy and her back began to arch as Tira grew sleepy. The young woman finally collapsed under her feet, entering a deep and realistic dream quest in which she must face the her fear and then come back where relaxation awaits without fear of the demon.

Tira awoke in the a small grass opening where the sun shined brightly onto her pale skin. She smiled, watching the glitter in the air and grabbing one of the tiny Nasturtium flowers that over flowed the area with their bright colors. Her smile widened, Nasturtiams were the sign of victory or conquest. She must believe that her conquest will be successful here, for if it did not, she could die.
"Now all that is left is to find my fear" She whispered to her self. the only problem was, where could it be? and how will I find it? Tira stood, here eyes still on the purple flower. As she stood, loud sounds erupted from her left along with the smell of a large bonfire filled her nose.
Tira squinted then looked up in horror of what she saw. Outside of her little sunny and lush area was nothing but scarred and ashen land. What Tira had previously thought was glitter was really ash from burned buildings, trees, and who knows what else. A few stranded people ran away from explosions, screaming and cursing as they nearly escaped death. Fire licked at everything it could touch slowly spreading from one area to the next, when one fire died another would erupt in different area as if on purpose. One of the survivors ran past Tira shouting.
"Run for your life!" He rasped at her, "come I know a safe place." Tira nodded and ran after him, looking back in time to see a fire erupt under the foot of two unlucky couples.
Tira and the man ran past upturned cars and melted buildings. There was not a single piece of life, all was dead. They entered a large car dump, and finally entered a small area of stacked vehicles. The cars and trucks were stacked carefully to make a deep cave for the survivors to enter. Tira was forced to crawl through on her hands and knees, even with her small body she had a hard time squeezing through. Once inside though there was so much space, and around five families of four sitting along the vehicular cave's walls. They were all frightened of the outside world, the witch could see it in their eyes.
"Who is she?" whispered one of the female. The area was a bit dark so they all shuffled around in search of a match.
"Another survivor, she seemed lost so I brought her here." it Tira's guide.
"Quick someone find a light so we can see her better."
"You fool, people cannot be trusted out there. Not since that witch anyway." hissed the first female.
"Witch?" Tira whispered, just in time for a match to be lit up in front of her face. Everyone gasped at the sight of her face in alarm. They all shot up on their feet and began to make for the exit, except for a few.
"THE WITCH!" they all shouted in unison. Tira's guide backed up, his eyes wide and teary, "YOU BROUGHT THE CURSED WITCH!" Tira shook her head slowly, growing scared of their reaction. The three survivors that stayed behind flipped out small pocket knives and started towards her.
"Wait!" Tira soothed, "I don't know what your talking about. I never did anything to you."
"Ha! You think that trick will work on us?" The man on the right snickered, "You think we wouldn't remember your face or what you have done to our families, or ourselves?" The man pointed at a long scar on the right side of his face. He was tall and burly with dirt covering him from head to toe.
"No, that wasn't me... please" the three men grew closer, ignoring Tira's cries. She knew she couldn't possibly have dine anything to these poor people, she was a good witch. That's when she remembered, this was just a world where her fear roamed. These people are not real, they are just victims of her internal fear.
"Wait, are you sure that's her?" It was the guide again. He had finally gotten his courage back up and began to walk towards the witch. The scarred man and his two friends stopped moving and looked towards the guide in disgust.
"Who else could it be? Are you an idiot?" it was the middle man, "First you bring her in and then you start to defend her?"
"You know as well as we do the evil things shes done." It was the third man this time. Both the middle and the third man were similar, almost exact twins.
"Yes," the guide started," and I want to get her as much as you do. But, if she was the real witch, wouldn't she have killed us already?" At this the three men looked back at the frightened woman, rethinking their decision.
"She could be tricking us." the scarred man pointed out, squinting at Tira as if trying to see through her.
"She could... but would fear look that real" the guide did the same as the the burly man, squinting. He felt like he was right but in the meantime wanted to make sure he was doing the right thing.
Tira thought deeply of what they were talking about. Of course, this witch that they were talking about must be the one who drove these humans to their death and must be very powerful. No one could be that powerful, unless...
"This witch you are talking about," Tira was scared to ask but she had to know for her own sake, "could I get her name?" The four men looked shocked at the question.
"You don't know her name?" whispered the middle twin.
"And your still alive!?" the second twin finished. All the men shook their head then look at the guide, as if they were all too scared to say it themselves.
"Tira," the guide whispered after some hesitation, "her name is Tira."
