The island nation of Niahmas, located in the center of the Bermuda Triangle, allows humans onto it's shores during the month of October only. At this time, half the island is transformed into a huge theme park where the inhabitants, terrifying creatures from your nightmares, entertain and terrify human tourists in the best ways they know how.

Mercury Kile is unfortunate enough to get locked in a janitor's closet by her "friends" and is left behind on Niahmas when the boats leave, trapping her there for an entire year until the boats return.

Jethro Widow, a spider boy from the small town of Spooktine, stumbles upon her while cleaning up, and, instead of turning her in or eating her, Jethro takes her home, where his parents, Ellan and Howe, adopt Mercury for the year, helping her find a disguise to stay safe on the island. Jethro introduces her to all his friends, and Mercury finds herself wishing to stay longer than a year, maybe forever?
