The air was cold as I stood on the stone railing of the hotel balcony, some 20 stories up. I breathed in deeply and closed my eyes, enjoying the feel of the cool city air and the sound of the cars and people moving below me. I put my hands out to my sides and extended my large crisp ivory white wings out readily to leave. The squeaky wheels of a hotel worker pushing a cleaning cart through the hall and past the opened balcony made me open my eyes again but not turn. They couldn't see me... no one could see me. It was one of the 'perks' of being an angel. As they passed the balcony and the sound of the squeaky cart faded down the hall, I closed my wings again, tucking them close to my body before looking down to the lights below. I had done this hundreds of times and adored the feeling of the jump before allowing my wings to carry me into the sky, but for some reason, I felt uneasy this time. As I looked down at the world below, I could feel myself tremble a little as my feet seemed frozen in place. Why did it suddenly seem like such a big fall now?

As I fully extended my wings now and readied myself to fly, a loud gasp caught my attention. Curiously, I turned my head, my left wing moving up out of the way as I peered at the human to which the gasp belonged. He was a handsome man, with chestnut brown hair and green eyes. He wore orange flannel pajama bottoms and a plain dark green shirt. I smiled for a moment before turning back around, thinking it was the view of the city that made him gasp. "An angel!" he said suddenly, his voice hinting at his own disbelief at what he saw. Immediately I spun back around, shocked that he could see me. I opened my mouth to say something, when I saw his own mouth do the same. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. He ran at me, his hand out and horror in his eyes. As he ran towards me, I could feel myself falling backwards, down and away from him. I had spun around too quickly, losing my balance and before he could grab me, I was plunging down off the balcony. The world was a blur as the buildings rushed up beside me. My hand was still extended out to grab the boy's, that was now no bigger than an ant's hand above me.

Fly! My mind screamed, and quickly I turned my body over to face the ground as it was speeding up towards me. I pushed my wings out and had bidded them to flap, but no luck. They wouldn't obey my pleads. I tried again, but still no luck. I screamed and held my arms up protectively over my face, ready for the impact with tears in my eyes when suddenly they sprung to life. I quickly pulled my arms away to see my wings carry me suddenly out of danger and towards an oncoming car. I shrieked, narrowly dodging it and a few more before one of my wings were clipped by a large delivery truck. With the sudden injury, I lost control of my flight path and smashed through the glass door of a business before sliding across its lobby floor. When I finally stopped I was at the bottom of the steps that led up to a slightly elevated floor.

Panting and slowly turning my gaze up, I locked eyes with another like me. He stood there and looked at me with mild interest and amusement. My mouth parted in surprise as I stared up at him. He was....different. One of his wings was as white as mine, while the other was black as night.... void of color. His eyes were different too. The one that was on the same side as his white wing was sapphire blue, while the other one was red as blood. Even his hair was split. Pale blonde on one side, and black on the other. Carefully getting up, I began pushing myself away from him. I had mixed feelings about this angel. He looked half fallen.
