Chapter 1
"I asked you who the hell is Tammy?!"
"None of your business get off my back!"
Scarlett stood in front of the mirror listening to the yells of her parents she had heard so many times before. She looked down "Maybe I should end it, right here, right now. Just fill up the tub with water and take those pills from the bottles then drink it down with the flask and lay in the tub, be out like a light and I will never have to wake to this nightmare I have to call life...” Scarlett sat on the toilet, she couldn't do it, she couldn't take the pills in fear she'll die painfully. Or worse, the paramedics come and get her then save her life. She took the flask that held the tequila and drank some of it.
She made a face, after all she was only 16 & drinking this for the first time. She picked up the razor blade then lifted up her long sleeve that now showed so many cutting scars on her wrist. This was her way of escaping the sadness, the horrid life she lives this was her rescuer, pain was her savior.
One swift flick of her hand & her wrist was now bleeding. She leaned back and held her wrist over the water of the sink so she doesn't stain anything, doesn't leave any evidence
Blood dripped into the sink full of water & slowly it turned into a weird pink, the pink that you could only get from blood mixing with water.
She closed her eyes as the screaming grew louder & let the painful sting of the cut take her away from all of this misery
Scarlett opened her eyes; she no longer felt the blood slide down her arm and drip into the water. She looked at it and sighed, the wound had stopped the bleeding itself. Sophie heard now "Fine! I'm going out to Mel's" her father grumbled as he started to walk out to go to the bar. "Leave just like you always do!” Scarlett could hear her mother's cries but it grew muffled. She figured her mother went into her and her father's room and was laying face down in the pillow crying, she was trying to cover it up, it didn't work, never did.
Scarlett looked at the clock and it read 1:27 a.m. She stood up, hid the flask, put the pills back, and then hid the razor in it's usual spot, behind the toilet. She walked quietly into her room so her mother didn't know she was awake and had heard the yelling. Scarlett closed the door to her small room. She put on her simple nightgown she wears to bed and tried her hardest to fall asleep since it was Sunday and she had school. Her work paid off and she fell asleep.

Chapter 2
Scarlett woke up and looked at her clock that was in her room and let out a sigh, 6:45 the time which she normally woke up. She got out of bed and put on a long sleeve and jeans to hide her cuts. She had long sleeves on every single day no matter the weather. It was her trade mark basically but she was bullied over it. She didn’t pack a lunch, if she did then she wouldn’t have anything to eat for dinner since her father hadn’t gotten paid yet and whatever he did have her mother and her both thought he spent on that other girl, only a few years older than Scarlett and was a waitress since she dropped out of school. Scarlett walked up the steps of the school while her head hung low, she didn’t want or need to be noticed, especially by the popular kids who’s entertainment was watching Nicole, the most popular girl in school harass and bully Scarlett both mentally and psychically.
Scarlett sighed as the bell rung, she had to make it through these classes for the day then she could go see Sarah, her best friend. She walked into her science class and closed her eyes as she sat down. Scarlett ran a hand through her hair then took out her notes for class as she was hit on the head. She didn’t even need to look at who it was to know who it was, Nicole “So how’s the skank today?” she asked talking to only one person, the only girl she bullied the most and loved to. Scarlett didn’t answer, it was always better not to answer back. Nicole put her hands on her hips “What you sucked a little too much last night and your throat hurts?” snickers and laughter came from her friends as one again Scarlett stayed silent. She let out a breath as the bell rung, the day barely started and already she wanted to leave. “Class, take out your homework and give it to Scarlett who will be collecting it”. Scarlett jumped hearing her name but she got up and started to collect the papers. As she passed Nicole and took her paper she was tripped by her. The class laughed and Nicole put on her innocent look that all the teachers always believed when the devil’s spawn did something to Scarlett. “Oh Scarlett you really need to watch where you’re going! You may trip again” despite her caring emotion she didn’t help Scarlett pick up the scattered papers, no one did as Scarlett hurried to pick up all the papers as few people still laughed at Nicole’s prank. Why did no one ever stick up for her? She answered her own question; she was a nobody who couldn’t stick up for herself much less another person so why would anyone stick up for her? She sat back down after giving the papers to Mr. Rodgers and closed her eyes thinking. Her thoughts drifted to her parents, she didn’t even try to pay attention since the teacher won’t pay attention to her anymore, she already was humiliated so he shouldn’t do it again. She thought of her parent’s first fight only a couple years ago. Her life was perfect a couple years ago, although she was still poor she was poor and happy. This paradise was before the bullying, before the fighting, before the drinking, and the cutting… “Ms. Ever please answer question 21” Scarlett snapped back to reality hearing the teacher call her by her last name, he rotated usually from the first name to the last . Scarlett stayed silent for a moment trying to figure out the answer before it was too late. She was saved by the bell. She let out a sigh, gathered up her books, and rushed out the classroom. Why couldn’t lunch be now?....After the long hours of classes lunch finally came for Scarlett and she was starving. She went through her bag looking for loose change praying there will be enough for lunch that day, she really needed a job to pay for food. It was either that or save change and pray she will have enough for…once a week sounds right. Scarlett let out a sigh of relief, she had enough for that day so she got in the long lunch line and paid. She was at the end and was one of the few ones left. She looked around to see if anyone was watching her and she took 3 apples and 2 oranges and stuffed them into her back pack before anyone noticed, she was trying to get so much since she wasn’t sure when exactly she would eat again. She walked out of the line then went to go sit down by herself, Sarah wasn’t here today for whatever reason Scarlett didn’t know. She ate in silence then threw her trash away after putting whatever she could eat later on in her backpack. Only 3 more classes and she was done with school. She walked out of the cafeteria before anyone noticed her. She sat down on the bleachers outside and drew in her notebook. She was an amazing drawer, there wasn’t a soul who could vouch for Scarlett though. It was drawing that helped her express the feelings when she didn’t have her razor, she was trying to stop that habit but it was like a drug, it was so overpowering she couldn’t help it. The bell rang and she headed inside “Three more classes…” she reminded herself.

Chapter 3
Scarlett walked home as she ran a hand through her hair and let out a sigh. School was so difficult but she had to go, God forbid she missed one single day in her mother’s eyes. She was barely learning anything though, she understood it all so easily and well but she hated taking tests and being put on the spot. She let out a sigh and headed into her room as she took a bite out of one of the apples she had gotten. She started to do her homework but felt like she should go see Sarah to see what had kept her from school as well as give her the homework for when she came back. Scarlett let out a sigh, she’ll go after she is done with her homework so Sarah could copy and Scarlett could stay and help her. She headed outside as the sun started to set. It had taken her a while to finish all of it.
The wind bit at her neck which was exposed and Scarlett shivered, this neighborhood was safe so why did she feel so nervous? Scarlett finally made it to see Sarah’s dad starting to pull away, probably going to work but her father, John was an evil man who hit Sarah simply because she looked like his cheating ex-wife. It would have been better for Sarah to go with her mother but she stayed, just to stay with Scarlett and plus her dad was somewhat sane and not the alcohol abuser he is now. She let out a sigh waiting for him to drive away and she looked up at the sky as she started to feel the drops of rain, great it had to rain right now. Scarlett slowly walked and looked through the screen door which was 15 feet away. She took an uninterested glance then her eyes widened not expecting the sight she saw.
Her heart beat quickened as everything happened in slow motion: Scarlett dropped her books on the concrete, ran up to the door, and as she pulled it open she saw clearly her best friend crumpling to the ground as the gun hit the glass table. Scarlett ran up and fell to her knees and started to scream “Sarah!” She flipped her phone as she called 9-1-1.
Tears streamed down her face as she heard the operator say hello but it was like an echo, a soft voice in the distance that couldn’t hear. Scarlett whispered into the phone “M-My friend, she just shot herself in the head…” she choked out everything as she looked Sarah over. New bruises, the glass table was cracked and not from the gun, Sarah’s forehead of bleeding too, not from the gunshot and Scarlett could easily put together what had happened. John hit Sarah one too many times and she finally had had enough. Sirens rang in the distance but all Scarlett heard was the unforgettable noise of the gunshot that went through her best friend’s head.

Chapter 4
Scarlett stared down at her friend’s body as the paramedics barged into the house and took Scarlett so he could ask her what had happened to Sarah, Scarlett was the only one who knew what had happened. “She-She…” she stuttered as she tried to say what had happened to her best friend but the tears in her eyes and the expression on her face showed it would be a while until she could at least get out the word “Sarah”. She heard the paramedic that was working on Sarah say not so softly to the other “No hope for this one, time of death 6:42, date is November 24. She probably killed herself over a boy”. Scarlett burst into tears hearing the man but she gathered whatever strength she had to turn around and scream at him for stating that her best friend was a love struck girl who would rather murder herself than to deal with heart break and of losing her love to another girl. “What the hell would make you say that?” She took a deep breath as the man’s face showed how shocked he was that she had been close enough to him to hear him and had been listening. The man next to Scarlett that had been asking her questions was shooting his partner dirty looks that Scarlett could see out of the corner of her eye. “You have no right to make that assumption about my best friend, or any person for that matter!” she screamed. She took another breath, then another. She couldn’t breathe despite the breaths she was taking, she was too stressed and she passed out because of it. Scarlett came to it and found herself on Sarah’s couch, well no longer Sarah’s, her death, and it only her father’s now. She heard her dad pulling up and her stomach dropped, she didn’t know if she could face him, he was the reason for Sarah’s departure, if it wasn’t for him her best friend would still be alive and well. Sarah may have even been happy since she never would have to go through the things she had which led to this. She looked up as she snapped out of her deep thought since she heard John’s voice “You wrench what did you do to my little girl?” It looked like he might hit her but she didn’t move pondering of what happened in her mind. Why did he play the innocent card when he was the devil himself? Why was she made to look like the murderer, the reason why her own best friend killed herself? So many questions confused her so when he was about to punch her she got lucky that the paramedics were in their mind and one of them grabbed John before he could send Scarlett into a coma where she would never awake for at least a day. She actually wanted him to hit her now, if it meant she wouldn’t have to deal with this pain and depression now, even though she would have to deal with it later was better than now she thought. She ran past him as tears streamed down her face as she ran outside fully intended on going home until she tripped. She fell to the ground and she looked over trying to see what she tripped on. She had no idea what it was until she touched it with her finger tips and her eyes widened realizing they were her books that were soaked. The heavy rain had soaked all her papers and books but she grabbed all her scattered books and stood up. She instantly could smell his alcohol filled breath but she couldn’t see him. She had no idea where he was until she felt his hot breath on her neck and she started to run. Her books flew through the air as her papers came out of her books and landed in the street. It was like a hit from a street fighter character. John had managed to uppercut Scarlett hard as she was sent through the air from the hit. She went up at least a foot. She turned her head as she started to fall, the last thing she remembered was the paramedics running out to her and yelling to her as she reached her body and held John back “Stay with us girl!”, she hadn’t given her name but she couldn’t give it right now. She wasn’t thinking about anything as she blacked out going into the comma that she knew she would get if, or now when she got hit by hi. She closed her eyes as the paramedics yelled; she couldn’t hold on, she felt so weak…

Chapter 5
Scarlett opened her eyes only to see white walls, and a bed that she was strapped into. By the looks she knew it was an asylum but she couldn’t figure out why she was here. She noted how everything was white; the walls were white as well as the chair and couldn’t possibly forget the monitor. A nurse came in and smiled at Scarlett as if she knew Scarlett all of her life “Ms. Ever how are you doing today?” The woman held a large needle which she didn’t try to hide as Scarlett let out a scream. She hated needles and she started to squirm at the sight of it. She couldn’t get out of the bounds that held her to this bed as the nurse started to prod her looking for a spot that she could stab Scarlett with the needle “Scarlett dear why must you always make this so difficult?” The nurse ended up cutting off Scarlett’s shirt and swung down the needle at Scarlett’s stomach, the monitor’s heartbeat started to go up quickly as she woke up in a hospital room but it wasn’t all white like the other room. She knew it must have been an asylum that her father had always talked about sending her to when she was younger as she kept asking what had happened to Zach, her older brother by 3 years. They told her he never existed but she knew he had been real but one day he had just disappeared. She never knew why but she had thought that it was because she hadn’t ever done all her chores but never mind that he was gone and that’s it. Maybe she did belong in an asylum if she made him up; only question is why would she make him up? She was a somewhat happy child, a poor but happy child. She looked over at the monitor that showed a steady heartbeat, it was her heartbeat but she had been sure her heart had broken and was shattered into pieces a long time ago. It was the biggest pieces that kept her alive, the thumps were in harmony but they were not one. There was a piece for each part of her that had been screwed up or she was deprived of something in her life.
Scarlett let out a groan , she had a headache that felt as if it was killing her and just for a moment she had forgotten what had happened but it all came back to her in 0.3 seconds, the gunshot that she would never forget the sound of, the paramedic that would always leave a horrific image of a paramedic in her mind, the punch that had left the aching feeling in her jaw that she would never forgot the pain off, and the best friend who she will never see, hear, or touch ever again unless she herself takes her own nightmarish insistence out of this cruel world. Had she been bad in another life? Is that why she was treated so badly now? That was a twisted fate idea but she had heard stories about that before, from religions...No, she couldn’t believe it, she believed facts now since she was sure that if there was a god she wouldn’t be going through all of this pain now
