The Chrono Trigger/Cross/Radical Dreamers Connection
Be forewarned, some of this is speculation, but based as much as possible on in-game dialogue and other facts.
Demihumans, Mystics Reptites and Dragonians
(under construction)

What are Demihumans? Are they just Mystics/Demons with a different name? What's the difference between a Reptite and a Dragonian? Are Demihumans actually a type of Mystic or are they something else? Why do they live in seclusion? Why do they worship a Dragon God and why does everyone treat them with such derision?

This is an odd jump from one game to the next and it's not well explained but the answers are there.

The short but most encompassing answer is that they are the result of Dragonians (the future name for the last surviving Reptites you see in Chrono Trigger DS's extra dungeons) breeding with humans of El Nido. Sadly, the pure Dragonians died off but some the descendants were hardier and managed to survive, albeit in small numbers, under the protection of the Black Dragon God.

This is why their culture is one that generally detests humans, akin to early Reptites, while striving to be one with nature along with their extreme reverence for the Dragon Gods.

Why do they come in a variety of animal forms though, rather than appearing dominantly reptilian? My theory is the Black Dragon God himself that rests on El Nido did this. We see two examples of demihumans, Nikki and Marcy, that have pretty much no animal-like features. They are said to be uniquely beautiful, but that's about it. It could easily be the case that the Dragonian blood is too diluted and a human appearance might have been the normal outcome of the demihumans continued breeding, but close proximity to an entity that was designed to mold nature, was able to change the demihumans around it into forms it found more pleasing. From bugs to bunnies, anything that would make them appear less human. Thus, since Nikki and Marcy were almost exclusively raised amongst humans, their appearance remained unaltered and nobody was the wiser.

Unfortunately for the Demihumans, that came with the unfortunate side effect of making them easy to single out. Combining that with a cultural hostility towards humans and just being different in general, it was a perfect breeding ground for fear and ignorance. It made them keep to themselves for a very long time, and gave people little reason to care about their plight when they were enslaved.

A unique instance among them is when you first visit the island as Lynx with Harle in your party.

It's understandable that Lynx would be seen as a Demihuman with his animal features, but Harle appears to be completely human, just one dressed as a clown. Despite this, none of the Demihumans treat her as human. This is technically correct of them, since she is a fusion of DNA from the Dragon Gods and Schala, but whether they have the ability to tell a human from a humanoid demihuman on sight/scent or that Harle just emanates a recognizable power is up for debate.
