What does my safety mean to you?

When I sit silently on the passenger side swiveling my head both left and right
only to make sure you don't crash because your face is buried in your phone.

What does my safety mean to you?

Does it mean it is lesser if I am not your child, mother or grandmother; someone whose opinion seems to be more valid than mine?

What does my safety mean to you?

For my anxieties rise as I begin to doze
because then I know no eyes will be on the road.

What does my safety mean to you?

Does it matter most when I begin to cross the road
and a texting driver does not slow
down
and finally hits me?

Does it matter most when your eyes dart straight to your phone
and an impact happens
now a mother won't ever be able to go back home
to her kids?

What does my safety mean to you?

Was it that my life was not worth holding closer than your face up to your phone?
