After summing up all my adventures into two hours of nonstop talking, I cuddled up against my mother while Shalimar snoozed between us.
Running a hand gently through Shalimar's curly hair, my mom said, "The last time I saw you, you were a little older than Shalimar."
"Yeah," I replied. "I think it was the day before I--"
Holding a hand up to silence me, my mother looked about. Judging from her posture and the look in her eyes, I knew something was up. Shifting out from beneath Shalimar, I transformed into my half dragon half human form. I still had full use of my bone claws but with all the full protection of my scales.
"What is that?" my mother asked. No dragons before had ever had a half human half dragon form.
"My anthro form?" I replied looking back at her. "It's more manuverable in small spaces than full dragon form and more protected than full human form."
"Interesting," mom said approvingly.
"Shhh!" I whispered, flicking my tail. Adjusting the reflectiveness of my scales to where I became invisible--and feeling my mother's approval radiate out at my second new trick--I stealthily crept over to the door of the room we were in.
Suddenly, the door swung open and the unconsious bodies of my guardians were thrown in. Easily ducking them, I slipped into the hall. Apparently whoever threw my guardians into the room had also learned how to make themselves invisible--but did not learn how to mask their scent.
That scent, I thought, carefully sniffing the air.
I haven't smelled that one since--"MOMMA!"
Snarling savagly, I ran back into the room to see an invisible force pick Shalimar up by the front of her shirt and throw her aside like a rag doll. Before I had time to react, a man fazed into view towering over my mother.
"Corrigan," my mother snarled seconds before the man punched her with a flaming fist and turning her into a pile of broken glass-like shards.
"MOM!" I yelled, becoming visible and rushing towards the man.
Turning slowly, the man
raised a hand with a glowing fireball and grinned.
