Ed and Al stood under the tent to keep out of the rain with their umbrellas’.
Sam refused to stay under the tent nor did she use an umbrella.
Sam wore Ed’s red jacket and a blue jean skirt and cow girlish button down, wearing her hair down. Most likely for the last time around others, she used a rubber band slowly as she tied it up tightly in a bun.
She squatted as tears leaked out her eyes and off her nose into the slowly streaming water that trickled past her feet tips. In front of her was Eclipse’s grave, soaking wet from the rain. Sam was also drenched. But for all she knew it was from her tears and not the rain.
What I thought wasn't mine
In the light
Was a one of a kind
A precious pearl
Sam stared blankly at the grave as she stood out somehow.
No one was around, no animal or person except Sam squatting in front of the grave.
The entire sense Sam felt as if it was a terrible dream, something only a terrible story could do to her. Ed and Al started to walk over, she glanced back at them then looked back but nothing more.
When I wanted to cry
I couldn't 'cause I
Wasn't allowed
Sam wiped her tears on her, or Ed’s now heavy jacket.
Ed stood right behind her and tilted his umbrella over her.
His head hung down so his face couldn’t be seen.
Sam coughed through her sobbing. Al looked at the grave with blank eyes.
Yet as he did they shook like he was about to cry but refused to.
Gomenasai
For everything
Gomenasai
I know I let you down
Gomenasai 'til the end
I never needed a friend like I do now
Ed put his hand on her shoulder and came down.
Squatted by her and glanced at Sam.
“You know, it wasn’t your fault” he whispered word for word slowly.
Sam didn’t say anything as more tears rolled down her red cheeks.
What I thought wasn't all
So innocent
Was a delicate doll
Of porcelain
When I wanted to call you
And ask you for help
I stopped myself
Sam had something held close to her, Ed grabbed her arm lightly and she took it away from her chest and put it on the grave. It was a small doll that was very old looking and unprofessional. Like a rag doll. It was a doll Eclipse and Sam made when they were small. Ed glanced at it.
Gomenasai
For everything
Gomenasai
I know I let you down
Gomenasai 'til the end
I never needed a friend like I do now
Sam squeezed Ed’s arm and buried her face into his coat as she stop squatting so that now her skirt was covered in mud. Ed was almost shocked by the look on his face and seemed unknown to what to do. After a few seconds Ed simply laid his hands on her back and held the umbrella by keeping it in-between him and his body. Al glanced at them,
Then back at the words on the grave, it didn’t say RIP or even her name. If she was of any importance, the person who thought of her of importance would know this was her grave. At the moment Al felt like he knew it was her grave more than anyone else.
What I thought was a dream
A mirage
Was as real as it seemed
A privilege
When I wanted to tell you
I made a mistake
I walked away
Ed and Sam stood up, oddly Sam was shorter than Ed.
Her arms wrapped around his. Sam looked at Al and went over to whisper something in his ear, “Gomenasai Al…” she said then went back to Ed.
Al looked at the grave, “I am sorry” he whispered then turned around as they walked away.
Gomenasai
For everything
Gomenasai
Gomenasai
Gomenasai
I never needed a friend
Like I do now
Gomenasai
I let you down
Gomenasai
Gomenasai
Gomenasai 'til the end
I never needed a friend
Like I do now
Afterward…
Snow fell heavily on the small house as Sam leaned against the counter in the kitchen looking out the window. She was wearing a soft fuzzy white long sleeve shirt that hung over her long jean blue skirt. Her hair was down to her shoulders now.
Noise could be heard like little whispers from were she was.
She held a mug full of hot cocoa. She didn’t have the happiest expression on.
She looked at her watch then went to the door and opened it.
Two figures that seemed cold came running up to the house through the one foot depth of snow. Sam smiled as she put her cup down next to two others that were prepared.
She ran up to them and laughed as one fell in the snow.
As she did a silver pocket watch bounced against her side.
All laughing Sam helped him up.
“Come on Ed, I know your so excited about putting the star up”
She said this time like a fun joke with a wide smile on her face.
