this is the second half of the story that i left off in "time for war".

now that the civil war is over, there is an immediate need to rebuild. the rebels are forced to help repair the damage. there is a council formed to help govern, which raysha is a part of. but the council cannot decide on what the focus of the reconstruction should be, though raysha fights for the building of schools and temples so that a semblance of normal life could be seen. the rebels also deal with getting people to trust them. in her personal life, raysh (now 16) is healing from a gunshot wound she received in the last battle. the doctors say she will only live to be 22. tren, a former rebel leader (age: 17) has caught raysha's eye and she has a major crush on him. he exhibits lots of kindness, helping raysha deal with nightmares that remind her of her childhood. eventually they both fall in love with each other. meanwhile, raysha works to rebuild as not only a planter, but also giving semi-secret self-defense classes for young girls. then tren and raysha are sent to help the village raysha came from. its completely fallen apart, and raysha and tren must fight bandits to regain control of the town. in the process, tren gets kidnapped. raysha, desperate to find him, makes an exchange with the Goddess (the main religion revolves around one Mother Goddess), if whe gives up her life force, she'll be able to rescue tren. the Goddess agrees. using powers provided by the Goddess, she finds the bandits and rescues tren. then, at the age of twenty, she dies in tren's arms.

bittersweet endings are my favorites. *sniff* crying
