Stupidity comes in many forms, and today it came to me in the form of hate mail in my PM box.
Yesterday, I was asked to go to the avatar arena and vote for a friend, so I meandered over to the arena and did my friendly duty. Since I managed to get there, I decided to hang around and throw out some votes. Usually, I don't give out tens to anyone becuz honestly, I'm very hard to please and I don't think anything below spectacular deserves a 10, however, I do try to be fair in my votes and comments becuz, face it, downvoting sucks arse.
Now, anyone who knows me also knows I have a strange sense of humour and yesterday, I was in rare form, feeling carefree and silly and giving out some 10's as well as other "high" votes.
As you might know, the avi arena is glitched and some avi's aren't showing. Some see a red X while others, like myself, see nothing at all. I didn't know this until I came across my first "invisable avatar", so, finding some humour in this, I commented them "10'd for being the first truly invisable avi in the arena" and I gave them a 10.
To me, this was just pure silliness that came out of the strange and unusual mood I was in. As I wandered through more entries, I saw another invisable avatar. Well, seeing as this "had been done before" (that's one lame-arsed excuse ppl who downvote usually give) I decided to have a little fun and I commented "9'd for being the SECOND invisable avatar in the arena- 1 point deducted for lack of originality" (becuz the invisability had "been done before"... joke ... get it?). Just as a side note, this person didn't send me hate mail becuz they are either more mature or have a sense of humour and didn't jump to any assumptions.
I went through a few more entries before coming across yet another invisable avatar, so following suit with my "humourous" little game, I commented them with "8 for being the third invisable avi in the arena this week ... points lost for lack of originality. It's probably best your avi is invisable becuz after reading that description, I probably would have given your entry a 3 had I been able to actually see it."
Now, I admit, maybe it wasn't the nicest thing anyone could write but it certainly wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen in the arena. I'm not some huge 'Hellsing' fan, for starters, so I could really care less about a Hellsing cosplay but with that personal opinion aside, the persons description was lackluster, boring and had more spelling errors than if my cat had typed it. I wasn't even the least bit intrigued by it to merit wasting time and effort to look at their profile and see if they were still dressed in their arena entry, so I didn't bother. (Tho, apparently they weren't, as I did look later)
For the record, Mysteh is a nice person but her tongue can be a bit sharp at times and what I think is mildly humourous, others might not quite "get", but that's acceptable to me. I understand that not everyone else in the world is going to find me funny, or understand why I say what I say, and that's okay. However, I firmly believe if you don't "get" something someone says, you're better off keeping your mouth shut or asking for explaination than you are flying off the handle and sending hate mail.
Of course, this person couldn't be arsed to do either. Instead they sent me the following PM (username removed becuz I prefer not to put a name to their idiotic comments or dignify their existence... it's for their own good, really wink ):
Immature, over-sensitive, inarticulate Gaian

Which was then followed up with a SECOND pm that read:
Immature, over-sensitive, inarticulate Gaian
p.s. at the begining i said NOT A STORY...or can you not read?
So, after I got done literally rolling on the floor laughing with tears running down my face, I was compelled to compose an explaination for my comments in simple, easy-to-understand point format, becuz, hey, I'm just nice that way. xp
After much contemplation and typing, I finished my response which was really me being quite nice, seeing as I can be a real b!tch if I want to. Of course, I wasn't arsed to spellcheck it for errors in context or formatting becuz quite frankly, I had already given this spectacle of sheer misunderstanding more attention than it actually deserved. With everything done, I hit send on my PM and what shows up next but a message telling me I cannot send this user a PM. Apparently, they sent me those hatey PMs and then BLOCKED ME!! rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl
Now, that is what I find funniest in all of this!!! The mentality of ppl who are so offended by another's comments that they feel a need to send some poorly written, inarticulate rant with improper spelling always astounds me, but when they turn around and immediatly IGNORE that person afterwards it makes me laugh so hard I could pee myself. Nothing says "chicken-sh!t" ... erm, *cough* "immaturity" more than someone who can dish it out but is afraid to receive any response or accept the consequences of their actions.
However, seeing as I am an "adult" and with a functioning brain, no less (who knew? eek ), I simply went onto my mule and sent the reply from that account which wasn't ignored.
I nicely, IMO, pointed out that if they wish to send ppl hate mail, they should have the guts to await a response. I also explained that the comment was made in fun and the "originality" part of my comment was directed at the invisability glitch and not their actual cosplay. As for the rest of my comment, it is what it is... I have given ppl 1's before if I felt they merited it and would do so again, so I was being genuinely honest there. Besides, it all boils down to the fact that I did give them an EIGHT! After seeing their nastygrams to me, I wish I could retract the 8 and give them a -10 for being a snotty little prima donna dipsh!t but I can't take the 8 back, so screw it. At least I can rant in my journal so it's all good! xd
Most ppl would have ignored their silly PMs anyways like I should have, but see, if you have read my other entries, you know ... I am a Moderation Specialist by trade. My job is to educate ppl online and tho I sometimes want to really be a first rate b!tch, I am almost always "smiling from the wrists down" even if my teeth are gritted and I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
Yes, as someone who is suppose to be a professional, I should have walked away from this, however, no one is perfect and I don't Moderate Gaia, so seeing as I'm on my own time and not at work, I don't have to be professional here. In fact, I could let loose and be downright evil, but that isn't in my nature.
Well, I have rambled on long enough and by now, if you have read this far, you are wondering what my point is and what bit of valuable information you should be gleaning from my little rant. Here it is:
1. If you don't understand something someone posts, DO NOT flame them or send them hate mail and don't assume to know what it is they are saying. You will probably be wrong anyways. Instead, ask them to explain their meaning or just stfu and let it go.
Mark Twain once said, "Better to remain silent and thought to be a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." This quote rings so true and brings me to another dandy that still makes me laugh even tho it's as used up as Britney Spears.... "Fighting on the internet is like the Special Olympics... even if you win, you're still retarded.". (and FYI, before getting into chatsite moderation, I worked with developmentally disabled and mentally challenged ppl in independent living situations, so no hate comments about me using that quote. I didn't make it up but I do find it an amusing way to look at flaming and font wars).
2. If you simply just can't follow the advice of #1, at least be articulate!!! Use spellchecker and know what words mean before making a total arse of yourself. There's nothing more sad (and fun) than watching someone make a complete idiot of themselves. It's a dog eat dog world and if you can't run with the big, articulate dogs, you're better off staying on the porch. wink If you choose not to stay on the porch, don't cry when they chew you up and spit you out into a steaming pile of doggy doo. You asked for it by opening your mouth in the first place.
3. If you are going to enter the avatar arena, get a backbone first and don't be such a whiney arsed prima donna if someone doesn't say nice things in their comments. If you can't deal with negetive feedback, disable ur fecking comments. If you don't disable them, then be able to deal with the comments be they good, bad or indifferent. Not everyone is going to think your avi is the next greatest thing since sliced bread... get over yourself. Oh, and contrary to popular belief, the description does matter!
And with that said, I'm outta here.
Cheers,
Mysteh heart heart heart heart
