(Days Gone By...) Part 2: College |

College has definitely been a new experience for me, I haven't been through anything like this before, and it's a mixed bag, but for the most part, I love it. It can be a roller coaster though, and balancing it with work can be a pain in the a**, but soon after I started, I got some perks that make it a whole lot easier.
Mondays and Wednesdays, I go to Psychology at 8:00 a.m. until 9:20. My professor is Mr. Hodges, and he's pretty laid back. He seems kind of meek though, because I notice that while he says in his syllabus he won't tolerate disruptions, there seem to be a lot he never deals with. He also has this nasty habit of ending nearly all of his sentences by asking, "okay?" to every one of them. Jason kind of dubbed him Mr. Mackey because of it.
We also got bored one time and took a gamble on how many times we'd think he says it in a single class period, and our bets were blown out of the water when he went past the 200 mark. I do enjoy the class though, and our textbooks have like already highlighted areas for you to make note of, so studying is ridiculously easy. The only downside is it's an early class, so I have to leave the house around 5:30 in the morning to bus it in time. I do get to have class with Jason and Raymond though, so that definitely makes it easier to cope when Hodges drones on and on, it's not easy to listen to him when you're already tired and his voice makes you sleepier.
10 minutes after Psychology, I have Composition, which is basically English 101, with Professor Langsdon. He's very "suit-and-tie" like, and is very passionate with his work, which makes me feel bad, because he gives off this "I wanted to become a writer but I never succeeded so I'm forced to release my energies for language by teach a college course". Also, one of our textbooks is co-written by him, and it cost me $40. Knowing that part of my paycheck is going to a book he wrote kind of pisses me off, especially when it's definitely not worth that much, considering it's composed of excellent writing his students have come up with, or passages from famous writers of our time.
I also don't appreciate his problem with people being on time and how if you miss more than 4 of his classes your grade drops a letter, considering he's never on time for class, in fact he didn't show up this morning so the class left a note and signed it saying we waited for him to show. But hey, I love when people eat their own words, it makes me feel so egotistical.
Tuesdays and Thursdays are Math and ALS, which stands for "Academic Life Success", this BS elective my counselor recommended me to take, and the only reason I'm glad I took it is because Kalen had the book for last year so the class didn't cost me any extra. My "professor", Mr. Tarkanian, used to be a college basketball coach (which already tells you about his mindset and attitude) and he tends to cuss a lot in class, which doesn't bother me a whole lot, except for when he does it in place of words that don't need to be cussed with. Also, the homework pile is immense.
Math is no big deal, to be honest I kinda enjoy the class, Mr. Cohen makes it pretty easy to understand, and he's not intimidating or anything, he's kind of the opposite. He has this deal though where he laughs at his own bad jokes, and when he laughs really hard it sounds like he's wheezing, so everyone stifles a laugh when he "talks to himself". He always has a bottle of Sobe with him during class, so every time I have Math I'm forced to think of Sonja and her bottle cap collection. xp
The pluses to Tuesdays and Thursdays is that Kalen has roughly the same time schedule, so he drives me to school with him, and we leave around the same time, which is awesome because I get to sleep in Monday and Wednesday nights and that's usually when I'm the most tired because I woke up so early and had work as well. That, and we'll usually go somewhere like Denny's for breakfast/lunch after our 11:00 classes are over.
That's all the courses I have, or can have for that matter, and overall, I enjoy this a lot, it's difficult, but when I think of the rewards I will benefit from all of this, it's what keeps me going forward. The whole thing is a big change, for one thing, you get a lot more freedom in college, no one makes you go to class, they have your money, they could care less if you show up or not. Also, the work and class sizes are different, and of course anyone can go to college any time they want, so most, if not all my classes have grown men and women attending them, which I don't think I'll ever get used to. Not like it's a bad thing, it's kinda cool at the same time knowing you're on par with adults.
That, and just knowing that this is another stepping stone, and that I'm part of society and have reached a certain level of maturity I have to cope with is pretty exhilirating. I look forward to these next few years, they look like they'll be my best.
Also, the food doesn't suck at college, it's ******** delicious.
