I learned a really harsh lesson at work the other day. It really sucks seeing how people really are, you forget that being pretty ignorant until it happens.
I came in for work on Sunday, and they didn't have a spot for me yet, I came in pretty early for the schedule to be written up for the closing zoners here. So I walked around for a bit helping anyone that needed it and doing lots of Guest Assistance. LOD Toni sees me in the backroom while I'm trying to get sheets for this one guest, and she assigns me the area of Toys/Seasonal. I can handle Toys no problem, by this point I almost enjoy working the area, I know it well, and I actually like messing with the stuff I put away, you can kind of play with the toys if no one's looking, it's not you could really do that in any other department. It's kind of hard to play with paper towels or a bottle of bleach.
So while I'm working another one of my Team Members, Scott comes by, asking what's up and if I need help. I say that sure, I could use the help, I'd probably appreciate it later. So for the most part he zones when I'm nearby, and it looks like he's doing an alright job, but his zoning could be a lot better that what he's doing. I have this perfectionist attitude when it comes to zoning, I use the "Diamond Rule" that Greg taught me. If you look at shelves for most stores, you'll notice that at the edge of every shelf there are like diamond shaped holes. I'm not sure if they're the for the reason to keep a good zone so that all the items on the shelves are pulled to the front and arranged neatly, but Greg taught me that if you do it like that, it looks good regardless, and some times you can get away with stuff being in the wrong area as long as it looks well-kept on the shelves.
So anyway, Scott wasn't really doing a good job of this and it bothered me, because when it comes to working in Toys, if you don't have a good zone then there's really no point to doing it at all, there's tons of things you just might as well be doing otherwise, and a good zone helps later because usually it will stay relatively neat so you don't have to do a huge job as we're closing, and since I get to leave regardless of whether we're done or not, I have a hard time letting it be messy when I leave, because I know if it were me, I wouldn't appreciate having to do someone else's job. The only plus side to this situation was that because it was Sunday, we closed an hour early, so I'd have time to do that in case the problem arised, I just would rather have not have had to do it.
Now I'm rambling again. But his actions kind of continued like this for the rest of the day, and in the back of my mind I keep thinking about how people have been telling me lately that Scott is a lazy a** and doesn't do anything, and he's taking his breaks a lot more conveniently and he's not making me happy. I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt and it's not working.
So, we're almost closing and I just want everything to look nice, he's nowhere to be found and I'm trying to take it as, ok, he's not here, so I can't see him not do anything, so at least I don't know he's slacking. He comes up and asks me if I need any help, when I'm almost done zoing through Toys. I say, no, I think I've got it here. So he says that that's great, and that he's going to go through and zone Seasonal (all the Halloween stuff) while I'm finishing up this. This brings my mood up, and I tell him to please do, I'd appreciate it.
So we start to close, and we have our evening Zone Captain Anika go through everyone and ask how everything looks. Scott beats me to the walkie and says everything looks great, so I assumed he took care of Seasonal. Now, we're kind of allowed to leave at 9, but no one does if we still have stuff to do, and if you do leave, you're supposed to say something to someone. While everyone's helping in different areas, I get asked to go do some go-backs for Seasonal. So I'm walking with my cart, and when I make it to Seasonal, my heart stops.
The whole place is a mess, Scott didn't even touch anything there, I doubt he even looked in this area. So I drop the go-backs and start zoning as fast as I can. Fate conspired against me, because my LOD walked over to lock the doors to Lawn and Garden. She sees the mess and to cut it short I basically got lectured because this was supposed to me my area, and even though I told her Scott said he was going to do it, she said I had no excuses because someone else didn't do my job. Not to mention, when I went to go find him and find out why Seasonal wasn't done, turns out he had already clocked out and gone home already.
So needless to say I'm not happy with him in the slightest, and I have an enemy at work, which I don't like at all because I didn't think people were going to be like this, considering the work we have to do is hard enough. But whatever, he'll get his soon.
