Gaia Name: Gatz TdaMax
Character Name: Yume
Species: Human
Attributes: Strength: 2 Intelligence: 5 Health: 3 Dexterity: 4
Appearance: She has a height of five foot three, and an attractively largely slender figure with moderate but well-placed curves. Her face is pleasant to look at, a fine combination of soft and angular features, though perhaps not stunningly beautiful. With her white hair and bright, piercing blue eyes, she tends to make people think of an delicately carved ice sculpture (before she opens her mouth, shattering that particular image). Her straight, silky hair is parted to slightly to the left of her forehead and is shoulder length in the back, and shorter directly above her shoulders. It’s an appealing but simple style. The expressions most commonly found on her face include passive disinterest, rolling her eyes, disbelieving stare, angry glare, and ironic smile. Yume usually wears a plain robe belted at the waist with a piece of rope, imitating the most basic of traditional garb for mages and healers. She owns a few outfits that are a bit more feminine, but one is more likely to see her running around in a blouse, vest, and pants when she discards her robes. Most of the time she wears a set leather gloves along with the rest of her clothing, either out of preference or for some unknown reason.
Character History:
_____Born to a poor family in the area near the southern part of the Bitterroot Mountains, she was raised to believe that everything is existence is interconnected. However, she’s also concluded that just because everything is tied together it doesn’t mean the world is a nice, happy place where everything turns out the way one might hope it will. The best example of this lesson is from her past is the death of her younger brother. The boy had had a simple, treatable disease, but the family lacked the proper funds to pay the town healer. As a consequence his condition worsened to the point of no return, killing him despite the family had finally managed to get him some treatment.
_____After her brother’s passing, Yume threw herself into studying various subjects in order to better her self and her lot in life, paying particularly close attention to Medicine and Herbalism. As she got older her family managed to pull itself out of poverty, partly thanks to her help. At the age of eighteen Yume came to realize that she still had a lot to learn about healing and the world in general. So she packed up her things and left home, becoming a wandering healer of sorts.
_____About one year ago the young woman happened across an injured Fennec in her travels. He had been left for dead after a bandit attack, and was in poor shape. Out of compassion she tended to his wounds, and over a few days managed to nurse him back to health. Ever since then she’s been stuck with Inari as her loyal companion and bodyguard. She tends to be very vocal in her complaints about his short comings, but the truth is that she’s grateful for his companionship and loyalty.
_____“A tongue sharper than any blade” is how most people would choose to describe Yume--and those would be her friends. With her sarcastic wit the young woman has devastated entire egos in the space of few well placed barbs. Because of past events in her life she has developed a cynical, no-nonsense outlook and a sense of irony that would make a Daerlfon proud. But rather than being depressed by such views she takes the stance that there is always room for improvement; and that said improvement can be accomplished with effort. As such she tends to view most of her insults more as constructive comments, and is rather casual about handing them out. Her friends know her well enough to realize she’s usually having half-joking. Because of her simple upbringing the young woman has a rather blunt and unrefined personality, which she frequently uses to mask her more tender emotions. Outwardly the two things she cares about most are money and alcohol--she loves going on drinking binges, despite the fact they never end well for her. The truth is that friends, family, and helping others are all among her top priorities. She likes to send a little money back home whenever she can spare it. From her time with the Iber, Yume has come to believe that Fennecs probably aren’t a threat to the human race; if anything, the opposite is true. She helps keep Inari’s secret from others out of friendship, and because she figures that she is safer traveling with the sword-swinger than without. As far as the healer is concerned, her lips are sealed on the subject.
_____Yume’s paradigm can most easily be described as “flow”. She views magic as a constantly moving “river” or “ocean” of power that moves through the world, complete with depth, currents, and eddies. Thus she believes that the various effects that can created through magic are only limited by the amount of power channeled and the skill with which one can control that flow. Her style of casting is based on attuning herself to this “flow” and then manipulating portions of it, usually making quick, fluid gestures as she shapes the “currents” she perceives. The specific motions used differ from spell to spell, and are not necessarily made with only using her hands--often a complex casting might look like kind of a dance. She is able to cast without the gestures but it doesn’t feel right to her, and the effectiveness of the magic is somewhat reduced.

Specifications:
*** Possible Counterbalancing Weaknesses ***
--- Scarred (birthmark) - A strange, slightly luminous birthmark appeared on Yume’s skin when she was born, growing as she matured. Eventually it covered an area the size of a dinner plate, at which point it seemed to take on a life of it’s own... literally. The odd mark can often be seen changing shape and drifting across various portions of her skin, particularly her face. It tends to respond to her emotions as well, and she as very little control over it. She tends to find the birthmark embarrassing, though a few people find it kind of cute.
--- Infamous (taverns) - Well known in many inns and taverns as an angry drunk, and with good reason. Many places refuse to serve her alcohol in their own establishment, mostly out of fear that the place won’t be left standing in the morning. As a result she’ll often try resort to trying to bribe or bully her way into getting a drink, which hasn’t helped her reputation at all.
--- Weakness (alcohol) - Yume loves drinking, but she gets intoxicated easily. As an angry drunk she tends to cause fights, injures, and property damage if provoked in this state. Those on the receiving end of her wrath find it a small blessing that she doesn’t pack much of a punch.
--- Criminal (disorderly drunkenness) - Wanted for several cases drunken disorderliness and severe property damage. The tattoo was magically branded on the back of her right hand while she was still passed out from one of her drinking binges, and won’t be removed until she’s paid off the damage she caused (with interest). She was also banned from all reputable bars. As a consequence Yume now travels, looking for places more forgiving of her drinking binges while she saves up enough coinage to pay back some rather irate tavern owners in her home town.
--- Unknown Enemy (spoiled noblewoman) - Yume used to bully the daughter from a wealthy family when they were both children, because the girl always acted like a stuck up little princess. Now her former victim has grown into a refined lady who has been married off to a powerful man. Using her husband’s money and influence she now seeks revenge for the childhood traumas heaped upon her. The woman sure can hold a grudge, can’t she?
--- Phobia (large cats) - She was chased after by a mountain lion when she was little, and has been frightened of large cats ever since. Upon seeing one she’ll either run and hide behind something, or reflexively blast the thing with the first magic that comes to mind. She isn’t as scared of Shimarren because they walk on two legs and are intelligent, and thus are fairly different from other cat-like creatures. She still becomes extremely tense around them, however, and may still freak out if they happen to be present in large numbers.

Gaia Name: Gatz TdaMax
Character Name: Inari
Species: Fennec (Iber)
Attributes: Strength: 4 Intelligence: 2 Health: 4 Dexterity: 4
Appearance: Inari is five foot eleven inches tall. The shape of his muzzle and his reddish-brown fur coat with white tips on his ears and tail mark him with the fox-like appearance most Ibers have. Like all Fennecs he has his family’s brand on his back. His eyes match the color of his thick, short-haired pelt, and usually have a cheerful look to them. He has a solid, toned musculature is well defined but at the same time not excessively bulky, and would be best compared to that of a professional gymnast. His strong physique is a bit more evident in human form, due to the lack of fur and the fact it’s hard to compare him to his giant kin. As a human he has the same auburn hair and eye color, with a slightly unshaven, roguish look to his face. His overall size remains about as his Fennec form, which takes the hassle out of him having to switch out of his clothes every time he wants to change. In his Canine form he basically looks like a large, heavily built fox, roughly the size of a wolf. He has a woven leather thong with three marble-sized brass bells hanging from it, which he wears as a necklace. Two of the bells were gifts from his deceased parents, and the third was a present from Yume. Since he treasures those gifts a lot he can almost always be found wearing it. He wears the necklace loose enough that he can wear it in all three forms.
Character History:
_____Inari came from a small family of Ibers who served as merchants traders for the Fennec people. This is an extremely dangerous occupation for any Fennec to have. Not only does a Fennec trader have to contend with the usual merchants dangers like theft and banditry, but it also guarantees constant interaction with humans, greatly increasing the chances of discovery. As such his father, an experienced Shaman, carefully schooled him in the art of Shamanism as a child, making sure that he had total control of his transformations. The young Iber also studied hard in order to comprehend the complexities of mathematical figures and trading rates, but it quickly became apparent that the task was beyond his mental abilities. He did show some promise as fighter, however, and thus his family had him trained under a Jaetan warrior so that he could be something every good trading party needs: a bodyguard.
_____When he was sixteen Inari’s parents began to take him on trading ventures into human territory with them, many of which were successful. One year ago on the return from one such trip, the family was set upon by human bandits. The Ibers fought back with all they had, but against the element of surprise and superior numbers they were quickly defeated. The attackers left the dying Fennecs on the ground as they looted the wagon, and when they had finished, the family was loaded back inside. The thieves set a torch to the wooden cart as they left, laughing the entire time. The heat of the blaze cause Inari to stir from unconsciousness, whereupon he pulled himself out of the cart and crawled around, dazedly looking for the parents who had been lying dead beside him. A short while later he passed out from blood loss…
_____It was days after the attack that Inari woke up the smell of food. It turned out that a traveling mage and healer by the name of Yume had been drawn to the aftermath by the smoke from the fire. She had then found him nearby and spent the last few days patching him up, feeling sympathetic towards him. Eventually their talk got around to the fate of his parents, and upon learning what had happened to them Inari cried himself back to sleep. He woke up a little later, still mourning. He even refused to eat, despite the fact he was practically starving. At this point Yume grew tired of his moping and practically shoved the food down his throat---even today he laughs just thinking about it.
_____After his recovery the Fennec found that he had no family to go back to and no feasible way to travel the long distance home on his own. At a loss for answer to his problem, he chose to follow Yume around out of the debt he owed her. In due course he grew rather attached to the little mage and her spitfire personality, and they became good friends. On some level he even thinks of her as the sister he never had, out of his instinctive need for family. He’s now fiercely devoted to her, despite any criticism he might receive from others.
_____Like all Fennecs, Inari is exceptionally loyal to his family and friends. Messing with either one of them is usually bond to earn the offender a quick and painful demise. He’s also quite serious about training himself as a warrior, an emotion born out of a desire to never again fail in his protection of those he cares about. Otherwise he’s a very friendly and carefree soul, with a slight streak of curiosity and mischief in him. His personal needs are fairly simple--good food, good company, and an open sky above him. Ian is also a bit of a skirt chaser, though He hopes to eventually get back to his people, despite the fact he has no family to go back to. Part of him can’t help but worry that he will have to part with his traveling companion once he goes back home, though. Initially Inari was a bit worried with Yume knowing his true species, but she hasn’t spilled his secret yet in the year they’ve been together. Between that and his rescue at her hands, he believes that she’s trustworthy enough not to give him away. Still, he remains understandably tightlipped about his people in order to defend their best interests.
_____Inari’s paradigm is a series of breathing techniques meant to attune his awareness to his body, energy, and surroundings, the clarity he gains making it easier to draw upon the power he needs. In this way it is much like the exercises used in yoga or martial arts. Controlling one’s breathe and focusing on one’s diaphragm or their “center” is one of the traditional ways for a warrior to meditate, and is often used even as one continues combat. This is a good paradigm for bodyguard as his magic--manipulating Ki and changing forms--is largely an internalization of power anyways. And as Inari would remark jokingly if asked about his choice of paradigms… “If I’m having trouble breathing, I just might have something more important to worry about than spell casting.”

***Counterbalancing Weakness Options***
Weakness (fire), Scarred (multiple tails), Affliction (battle scars), Phobia (fire), Unknown Enemy (Fennec killer), Bad Luck (trouble seeker)
Specifications:
--- Perception - Taking to heart importance of alertness because of the ambush that killed his family, the Fennec has worked to hone all five of his senses to an extreme rarely seen even among his kind. It’s quite rare for Inari to miss something, or for an attacker to get the drop on him.
--- Ambidextrous - Originally right handed, he’s become just as skilled with his left hand through intensive training. He’s worked so hard out of a desire to have the ability of holding off multiple opponents... or ambushers.
***Counterbalancing Weakness Options***
--- Scarred (multiple tails) - Inari appears to have some magical flaw in his Shamanism. Ever since he began shape-changing, his Canine and Fennec forms have always wound up having multiple tails. Currently he has three, having gained the third one when he reached the age twenty---apparently a new one appears every ten years. He’s gotten used to the extra limbs so that his balance is unaffected by them, but even Inari finds this trait to be rather odd.
--- Weakness (fire)- Like the rest of his race Inari is covered with fur, which it turns out burns quite easily once it has been set alight. It’s also much more difficult to extinguish a thick pelt than human skin, extending the time that the Fennec burns. Fire is not Inari’s friend when he’s in his natural or canine form.
--- Phobia (fire) - The ambushers who attacked Inari and his parents years ago set the family’s wagon alight… with the dying family still inside of it . Large fires bring back memories of the attack and the feelings of fear and helplessness he had as his parents died beside him. The result is that result Inari’s mind begins to lock up, slowing his movements and hindering his actions in general. Being near a huge inferno would almost utterly freeze his rational thought process, either causing him to curl into a small whimpering ball of agony, or to run for the hills.
--- Unknown Enemy (Fennec killer) - The ambush that took his parents’ lives was not the random highway robbery that many would believe it to be. Someone, somewhere has it out for Inari and his kin. The only reason he has survived this long is that he was reported dead after the ambush, but a rumor that there was a survivor is about to reach certain ears...
--- Affliction (battle scars) - Inari still retains many scars from the ambush that nearly took his life. In his human form they simply appear as normal scars would. In his Fennec or Canine form they appear as thin streaks of white of rough fur across his normally smooth, auburn coat, indicating places where the hairs no longer grow properly due to the damaged tissue beneath. He’s also missing the tip off of one ear. Inari’s not much of a looker any more, but he’s alive.
--- Bad Luck (trouble seeker) - Inari is one of those people has a nose for finding trouble, usually winding smack dab in the middle of it once he does. Luckily his bad fortune seems limited to getting into tight spots, and over the years he’s grown better at getting out of them.
