Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Nineteen: Overnite Sensation
Holy crap, this is the featured journal now! Is that good or bad? It's a little bit of both. We have some new folks reading...

So let me in-tro-duce myself
My name is Fleep. Pronounced like a sheep.

As many of you know, I'm a developer (dev for short) for Gaia Online. I started working here on July 5th, 2006 and ever since I've been keeping a journal of what it's like to work at Gaia and life around the office. I update this journal every Friday, so keep an eye out!

I wrote Daily Chance and I'm currently working on a Top Secret Project which hopefully will be released next week. (Some Gaians are trying to guess what it is. Fools!).

Flash Flood!
So, this is the spotlight journal or whatever it's called, and suddenly I'm getting a hojillion profile/journal comments. Just a warning, I may not be able to respond to your comments as quickly as I used to be!

What is... "luff"?
Thanks to all the Gaians who poured their love into this thread. It means a lot to us to hear something other than complaining rofl Every once in a while (especially recently, thank jeebus) a Gaian PMs me to tell me, "Thank all the admins for me!"

(A) You're not the boss of me
(B) Do what I tell all the other Gaians: start a thank-you thread, or post in one that exists. It makes us very grumpy when we only hear people moaning and groaning.

So if you thought we did something right, tell us! We already know what we're doing wrong crying

No, YOU the Man
Some Gaians wrote an open letter to Craig, our CEO. Some users are afraid he's a monster, a money-grubbing, baby-eating, corporate suit who wants to suck the blood out of every living thing he comes into contact with.

No, he's much worse than that!

Actually, Craig is at least partially responsible for a lot of the great things that have been happening at Gaia. We're fixing bugs AND releasing new features, and we're a much more efficient team than we ever were before.

All he asks in return is our love of Gaia, a dedication to our work, and a daily serving of infant flesh.

Yay or Neigh?
This week's weekly comic has to be the funniest one yet. Some users thought it was a bit too much, but I'm sure they said that AFTER they laughed their asses off.

(I think there was an alternate version of the comic too... but they decided to go with the more mature one eek )

Forget the Survey: Real Gaia Bribing Controversy!
If you've read my past journals, you know that we here at Gaia play the sport of kings.

We have a passion for ping pong, and we've developed several house rules and games (including a game called "Bodycount", which might be too violent for this journal).

One of our house rules comes from when we're playing short games of 5 points (when there are a bunch of people waiting to play). In a normal game of ping pong, people switch serves every 5 points. Since we're playing such short games, we play "whoever gets the ball gets to serve it".

Sometimes a bystander will pick up the ball, and will be stuck with the decision of who to give the ball to. Out of desperation to win, the opponents will sometimes try to bribe the bystander:

"If you give me the ball, I'll give you 150,000 Gaia gold."

"Deal!"

Certain Gaians have worked up some pretty bad debts this way crying

Oops, I dropped a name
I've gotten a bunch of PMs and comments from Gaians telling me they're my #1 fans. You can all be, collectively Fleep's #2 Fan. #1 will always be Sgt. Pepperhat, who laid claim to the #1 fan title a long time ago (and also happens to draw a really funny comic involving me rofl )

I also want to direct you all to The Gadmin Project, another story by the ever-prolific Cid High-Wind. I really appreciate people who generate content on Gaia on a regular basis.

Finally, I want to give props to Xya for her fantastic, unsolicited work in the Site Feedback forum, and especially her exhaustive Gaian Item Project thread. Users like her make Gaia a better place for everyone. If every user who complained about Gaia did a little something to contribute (because, really, it's you who make Gaia great, not us) then Gaia will be better than '03, better than '04, better than ever.

Comments Welcome
That's all, guys. If this is your first time reading, I hope you check it out next week, or read some of the archives. Also, I love comments and love responding to them, but I don't know how to respond to these comments:

" heart "

"Awesome!"

"OMGILUKTHXBAI!"

Gimme something to work with! wink

Congrats for coming to the Journal Spot Light on Gaia. Yours is a journal I plan to dip into on a weekly basis.

Oh -- one thing -- (I get to grouch. I am the *King of Grouch*) -- I have not been able to bring my buckets of precious fish to my personal inventory during the Fishing Game. The save feature has not worked for me.

So there have been more than one slippery Gaian guppy that has gotten away. (Not to mention old boots and tires)

wink

Kudos!

I didn't need that spotlight to find you! You were already pretty popular in my book.

Though I will admit to have never commented on one of your entries before. But I will also admit to the fact that I have been trying to guess what you uber-secret project is.

[-does the new cool-thing-] I'm a sheep, what can I say? D:

But all I wanted to say was that it's awesome getting to know Gaia from your p.o.v. it makes it just a little bit more real to me. xD Some tend to forget that there are actual [human?] beeings creating, and working on this for us - I'm glad you got the spotlight, so that now people can get a glimpse of the real Gaia. whee

Thank you for beeing awesome.
And muchly thanks for creating good stuff for us ungrateful gaians. emo

You seem very well-spoken! smile

Thank you for the Halloween event. It was really quite appreciated, sirrah!

As well, I'm just delighted by the advancements recently made towards the Battle System.

Also: who is behind Cindy Donovinh's reports? I really like her and wish she were a more active part of the storyline -- kind of like a Gaian Lois Lane (I know you know who I'm talking about -- no adult in North America is impervious to her fame, unless they are recent immigrants). I wish that Agatha was more involved as well. She's classy!

Lastly, I'd like to point you towards a fun profile -- Cruorin's. So Halloweeny!

Take care, Fleep! You've got personality!

Woo, comments are working!

And now you REALLY start to become popular because of the spotlight. 3nodding

Just wondering, wouldn't bribing gold for the ball technically be selling the ball to a user, thus making it against the ToS? rofl Oh administrators and developers, what will you crazy folk do next...?

Dear Fleep,

when I am plagued by traumatic(sp?) images at bedtime this evening thanks to the lovely picture of the world's creepiest clown(that'll teach me to click links without reading the URL first) who do I bring my insomniac complaints to, yourself or whoever put your journal in the spotlight?
:'(

xD I like the way you've illustrated your journal though, makes it more interesting ;p

commentCommented on: Fri Nov 10, 2006 @ 08:01pm
Dear People Who Know Fleep, I am writing to express my concerns about Fleep and, more specifically, his perceptions regarding damnable fomenters of revolution. Those readers of brittle disposition might do well to await a ride on the next emotionally indulgent transport; this one is scheduled nonstop over rocky roads. As soon as you're strapped in, I'll announce something to the effect of how Fleep wants to redefine unbridled self-indulgence as a virtue, as the ultimate test of personal freedom. What's wrong with that? What's wrong is Fleep's gossamer grasp of reality. Whenever I hear someone say that he is omnipotent, my upper lip develops an involuntary curl. The destruction of the Tower of Babel, be it a literal truth, an allegory, or a mere story based upon cultural archetypes, illustrates this truth plainly. Pardon my coarse language, but far too many people tolerate Fleep's contrivances as long as they're presented in small, seemingly harmless doses. What these people fail to realize, however, is that there is a format Fleep should follow for his next literary endeavor. It involves a topic sentence and supporting facts. His lawless dream is starting to come true. Liberties are being killed by attrition. Favoritism is being installed by accretion. The only way that we can reverse these closed-minded trends is to bring meaning, direction, and purpose into our lives. To be precise, I feel no more personal hatred for him than I might feel for a herd of wild animals or a cluster of poisonous reptiles. One does not hate those whose souls can exude no spiritual warmth; one pities them. We must insist on a policy of zero tolerance toward revisionism if we are ever to expose his malversation. Yes, this is a bold, audacious, even unprecedented undertaking. Yes, it lacks any realistic guarantee of success. However, it is an undertaking that we must undoubtedly pursue because Fleep says that taxpayers are a magic purse that never runs out of gold. Wow! Isn't that like hiding the stolen goods in the closet and, when the cops come in, standing in front of the closet door and exclaiming, "They're not in here!"? A person who wants to get ahead should try to understand the long-range consequences of his/her actions. Fleep has never had that faculty. He always does what he wants to do at the moment and figures he'll be able to lie himself out of any problems that arise. Now that this letter has come to an end, let me remind you that it was intended to provide an accurate, even-handed, and balanced discussion of Fleep and his prognoses. Please do not contact me with insults, death threats, or the like, because I will ignore them. If you disagree with my arguments or can provide further information about Fleep, please contact me and I will endeavor to make any necessary corrections to this letter. Summary: I can't wait for the surprise. Although I do hope it's Tattoos
