The Power of Music
Music, some say, is able to penetrate the soul. It is one of the most influential and meaningful aspects of my life. It was not just my one favorite band or one favorite song that has impacted me; it is a combination of instruments, genres, styles, and lyrics.
Spice Girls. Ever since I was young and discovered the pop-girl band “Spice Girls” I have loved listening and basking in almost any kind of music. Before I heard them, the only music I knew existed was country, because that was all that my mom listened to. From that point on I realized I had my own taste in music. After delving into what I could define as “my taste”, I came to another realization: lyrics are more than just pretty words thrown together. Some bands are able to give true meaning and inspiration to their lyrics, making their music all the more powerful. Sometimes listening to music is almost like reading a book; it can be a story.
Clarinet. When offered the chance at the age of nine in the fourth grade, I eagerly accepted the offer to join the school band. After testing out each and every instrument, making ghastly sounds on each, I chose the clarinet. With its black body and stunningly silver keys, who could resist? After much hard work, I managed to rise to the first chair of my band, but only after putting my parent’s ears through a lot of pain. From there I progressed to marching band. Marching Band. Joining the marching band in high school was a definite turning point in my life. Coming from a very small school with a graduating class size of twenty-four, I knew high school was going to be a major change for me. I wanted to join some kind of sport or club, but at the same time I was afraid to. I was afraid that I would not fit in, or other people would not accept me. I was afraid of rejection. But my adoration of music got the best of me and I joined the marching band. It was one of the best decisions I had ever made. After the very first meeting, I found that everyone there shared one thing in common with me: their love for music. We were all there for the very same reason.
Music. I have learned much throughout my life from my music. It has led me to appreciate the value and beauty in life. Without it, life sometimes seems bland and tasteless. Although my taste in music has changed throughout my life, one thing has not, and that is my love and passion for it. Whether I am unwinding to “Symphony No. 5 in D Minor” by Dmitri Shostakovich or rocking to “Here It Goes Again” by OK Go, music can always fit my mood and help me refocus myself on my goals and tasks at hand. Although I will no longer be able to study music, it will continue to influence, shape and mold the person I am.
Yeah, so that was my essay to *hopefully* get into the honors program at NIU. Wish meh luck!! (Cuz I really need it!!)
