What do you tell someone who has lost everything? How do you comfort someone who has witnessed destruction at its worst? No matter how far away from the problem you are, no matter how many sources the news of the disaster went through before it reached you, when you come face to face with someone who was there, someone who saw it with their own eyes, someone who choked on black smoke and tripped on the burned remains, what do you tell them? What do you say to them? We have all seen the small things, when a bird hits your window and you feel responsible for the death, responsible for placing that window there, and your human faults ooze through your animal skin and show up in the blood of that small creature, a fellow living thing. But when so much destruction is witnessed by another, how do you relate? How can you possibly imagine what they went through, being so near to the elimination of so much life. You do not notice, do not think about, the living things, the life forces, all dying beneath your hand every day. Being sprayed with pesticides, or washed with soap. They all die. But when you meet someone who saw the destruction of something so great, something human, something you can relate to, and that is where the relation ends, what do you tell them? What do you say to them? sad
