Pedro the Cockroach
Pedro was a cockroach who lived in Chilitown. Chilitown was very poor and Pedro and his family were having an extremely rough time as of late. The village was in the midst of both a drought and a major economic depression, so there was very little food throughout. Pedro decided that enough was enough and they had to go away to live a better life. The next day, he woke up early and got his wife and six children out of bed. “We’re going to Flyville!” he told them all, “They have plenty of food and enough jobs for all of us, so I’m sure they won’t mind sharing.” With that, they packed up all they could carry in their arms and headed off. After a short walk, Pedro and his family came across a river that spanned the countryside. There were flies on the opposite side wearing formidable-looking guard uniforms. Pedro was somewhat worried, because he was a cockroach without an ‘honorary fly card’. However, he was sure that once he explained his family’s plight, they would be more forgiving. When the nearest fly guards were looking in another direction, Pedro and his wife assisted their brood across the river. Unfortunately, they had not gotten away unseen, and one of the flies had spotted them. “You there!” the guard shouted, “Where do you think you’re going?!” He ran over to Pedro to confront him. “You aren’t supposed to be here!” he scolded. Pedro apologized to the guard very politely. “I am so sorry”, he started, “but my family and my situations are very dire!” Pedro told the fly guard all about his little village of Chilitown and their terrible drought. He was very sincere and bowed his little cockroach head while he explained that the food and water quality just wasn’t healthy at all in their village. The fly guard seemed a bit skeptical, but really couldn’t do anything about Pedro’s trespass. As it turned out, the guard was simply a volunteer monitor and had no power to enforce the law and no weapons on him. He simply had to let Pedro and his family off the hook. Pedro led his family a little further and entered the great, sprawling metropolis that is Flyville. The only ones living there, until now, were flies, but Pedro and his family had a feeling that they’d fit right in with everyone. It took a few weeks, but Pedro eventually got a job organizing the flies’ front yards. In the meantime, his six children went to fly schools and the flies of Flyville were very generous to Pedro’s family. The citizens helped pay for the childrens’ schooling and didn’t charge Pedro taxes so that he could get on his feet. They also helped pay for garbage collection and other such conveniences. Pedro and his family lived so happily that many other poor, hungry cockroaches from Chilitown joined them in Flyville. And all of them lived happily ever after.
