Insanity
Surrounded by cushioned, pallid walls,
I grovel in my tears, I scream out in fear,
I can't seem to do anything at all but tremor in my shallow mind,
Populated with the thoughts that just might,
Strangle me to insanity.
They stuffed me in this tight jacket,
Men in white hustled my into this prison,
Where my only friend is me, and only me,
And, of course, the voices calling out to me,
Calling to me oh so endearingly,
Yet all I can do is yell back,
Shrieking for the voices to speak back,
But they are not educated in my language,
For they just keep bellowing my name.
I try to lash out, by my arms are bound,
I grasp for a better understanding of humanity,
They want to help me? Get me out of here!
I am not insane, they should know so!
I do not belong here! I am no freak!
I call out to the doctors,
My face crimson with anger, my eyes bloodshot with angst,
"Let me out! Let me go back to my wife and children!"
The doctors rush to me, calming and soothing me,
I kick and yell as they restrain me,
I dream of leaving this institution,
I dream of my wife Joella,
My daughter Kelley,
My newborn son Joseph,
My family.
They've kept me here for about three years,
But I know, my dear family will come free me soon,
I will get to see Joseph all grown up,
I will get to see Kelley perform her ballet number,
I will get to see Joella's charming face as I hold her again.
Here he comes.
I recognize the beat of his footsteps,
He slowly unbolts the door,
And walks in.
"Dr. Madison," I whisper, "you may leave. I am not crazy."
He sighs deeply and comes over to me,
"Let us begin another session, Mr. Thompson," he says to me, "Do you know where your family is?"
I stare blankly at him, "At my home, probably enjoying dinner."
He inhales deeply and looks me in the eyes, "They died three years ago, Jim. They are dead. Come to the realization, please, Jim. It's been three whole years since the fire. Please."
I slowly c**k my head and wonder,
Why do they taunt me so?
My family is fine, I refuse to believe it,
They are coming to release me from this prison soon.
If not today, then tomorrow.
Tomorrow, I will be freed.
