I remember when i was little... visiting my uncles house... I used to sit on the piano bench for as long as i could banging on the keys with my tiny baby hands. I loved that house, the sunlight through the windows warming my busy hands & my uncle silently sleeping in the arm chair in the corner. With a big book resting on his belly that i would never dream of understand, being only about 3 or 4. Then once my mom would come to tell me I had to go home & would give him a kiss goodbye, his white mustache would tickle my cheeks & make me smile.
One night, i think the night of christmas, i cried so hard that i didnt want to leave so they let me sleep over. I sat awake giggleing with my cousins. Then in the morning I would sleepily hop down the narrow stair & my uncle would make me breakfast. That was always my favorite breakfast hehe he would make me honey tea & pancakes. But not just normal pancakes, he would shape them into mini-mouse who was one of my favorite disney charactors hehe.
So once i was in about second grade & was learning how to write, i began to write letters to my aunt & ask her how her & uncle andy were doing & if anything was new. I only got to see them every holiday as i got older. I would play with my uncle & he would tease me by taking away my nigh-night, or the little white blanket i carried around with me since as far as i could remember. So in about 2nd grade along with a letter to my aunt, i sent my uncle a piece of my nigh-night hehe.
As I grew up, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, we became more distant. Didnt talk as much as we used to. Still up held those conversations during family get togethers though. Talk about books, how my sports were going, pianos, but "he was still a man of few words." just like my cousin said... at his funeral.
When i was in 6th grade he gave me one of the things i treasure more then anything, he gave me his piano. My god i played it so much my parents even stuck it in the garage so they wouldnt have to hear me play it hehe.
So to this day I play for him. I work to make him proud. I live with the memory of him as my hope.
Rest in peace uncle andy.
