Downside - My parents understands Mandarin (at least some). In other words, they know what they're saying...or get wrong ideas on it. And they annoy me, asking whether or not I understand what's going on.
I don't think they know what subtitles are for.
Either that, or they just have some parental instinct to annoy their daughter when she's into a show.
