Background: Looking cooler than ever, Athrun Zala, son of former Supreme Chairman Patrick Zala as well as a ZAFT Elite Topgun in the #1 Le Creuset Team, officially resigns his position as well as his allegiance with ZAFT after the war of Jachin Due. Instead, he becomes a bodyguard of Cagalli Yula Athha, and because of his resentment towards the war, he changed his name to "Alex Dino". During their informal meeting with ZAFT to negotiate about ZAFT using ORB technologies, Athrun's cover is blown b Cagalli in which Dullindal takes great interest in. Supreme Chairman Gilbert Dullindal pursuaded Athrun, and eventually felt obligated to rejoin ZAFT as a member of FAITH, a "third faction", whose members report directly to the Supreme Chairman. Although he resented war, he feels that his prescence is needed in order to find an end to the war. Because of his rejoining with ZAFT, the tables have turned and he once again ends up on a different side of the board than Kira Yamato and the rest of the Archangel crew. He joins up with the Minerva on the Earth and assists them on their operations, though he later rejoins the Clyne Faction in which he is saved by the Archangel.

Personality:
He has a more refined and enhanced personality in Gundam Seed Destiny. He is much more leaderlike and is capable of handling rowdy and spoiled brats like Shinn Asuka. His plans are usually extremely strategic and are successful. He is kind to his team members and treats them with respect, except for Shinn Asuka. If a team member has an issue or something wrong, he often tries to find out what is wrong with them and tries to help. When dealing with people who try to give him a hard time such as Shinn sometimes acts, he is able to act extremely serious and become forceful at the same time, that are capable of making sure that he carries out his task. Though he does like to show off how a verteran does things and wants to prevent or stop the war leaving ORB to join forces with the Minerva. However, after a long while, he realizes a bit of the true intentions of Dullindal's disguise.

Skills:
On the field of battle, Athrun Zala excels piloting just about anything. When he pilots a standard mobile suit (Phase 1), he is able to pilot it with immense skill and bravery. Noted for his skills, Dullindal provies Athrun with Saviour, one of the new Gundams. He is extremely agile and fast and makes use of power, speed, and skill all at the same time. However, despite his improved skills, he cannot easily defeat enemy Gundam pilots such as the experimental Earth Alliance pilots. With that being said, although his skills in combat have a definite increase, they are not as skilled as that of Kira Yamato. After his Saviour is destroyed in battle with Freedom, Athrun gets the Infinite Justice and fights alongside Kira's Strike Freedom.

Athrun Zala used to be friends with Kira Yamato when he was younger, but he was Forced to be in a battle against the Naturals and Athrun must fight against his old friend Kira. Despite these circumstances, later on Athrun remains a friend to Kira. His mother died in the "Tragedy of the Bloody Valentine" in the Cosmic Era 70 three days after war was declared by ZAFT. Athrun pilots the Aegis Gundam, but the Aegis gundam gets destroyed and he gets hold of the Justice gundam from his father Patrick Zala, who is one of the greatest war leaders in the PLANT Supreme Council. Cagalli has feelings for him, and they kiss later on. He was the ex-fiancee of Lacus Clyne. Athrun Zala graduated top in his Academy and therefore wears the red Elite ZAFT uniform. His red uniform also symbolizes that he is a part of the Klueze Squad, which is the only squad who wears this kind of uniform.
