Dr. Martin Luther King’s Vision and Its Impact on this year’s election.
“I have a dream” is the most read speech in elementary schools across America. It’s inspiring message has touched and changed millions of hearts, and it echoes in the ears and mouths of children and adults alike as a declaration of equality, a declaration of peace, and a declaration of love.
Love was the driving force behind Martin Luther King Junior’s beliefs, protests and speeches; he never suggested violence as the answer, and neither should we. Today in America we have just as many controversial issues to deal with as he did, and the answer to change is the same: love.
By love this year, we have made great leaps and bounds to free ourselves, and our children, from moral iniquities that are still plaguing our society today. By love we’ve looked past a man’s color to see the “content of his character” underneath. By love we have achieved Dr Martin Luther King’s dream.
But is a color-blind country enough? Is America not still a host to the same prejudices as Martin Luther King opposed with his whole being? We have looked past the skin color of a person and into his soul, but our society today finds differences to hate there, too.
As long as we continue in our aggravated hate for an individual or group of individuals, we continue to rob each other of the privilege of obtaining Dr King’s dream. As long as we continue to destructively snub the peers in the halls of our schools and the cubes of our workplaces just because they are smarter or more stupid than ourselves, or more strange or more boring; as long as we continue in any kind of hate, we cannot realize the dream of equality, peace and moral excellence that Dr King gave his life for.
