Random Ramblings of a Bean (part 24)
0. It has been forever since I wrote in here. Why am I writing now? Because I have the time and more people read my Gaia journal than my blog. But I might add it there, too. Maybe.

1. So. College. It's like glorified high school only with a lot more people and food options. Yes, going from a high school with a total of 180 students to a college with over 24,000 students can be a little frightening at first, I won't deny it. The food. THE FOOD! There's a lot of it. A lot of different kinds of it. A lot of different prices for it. No wonder people gain the freshman fifteen. I've actually lost weight, though. Just a little. Which is nice.

2. I don't consider myself to be thin. But I don't really see myself as fat, either. Due to the lack of PE in my life, a bit of buff has gone to puff, though. It's a sad, sad fact of life. If there was someone you paid to live in your body, exercise it and feed it right for a month or two, I would totally pay the fee. That's just how lazy I am. But I will be getting back into the physical activity mode of things soon enough.

3. People often ask what you would do if you knew you only had a month or something to live. My answer is simple: I would eat my way around the world. I'm not exactly a food nerd, but I'm not uneducated in the ways of the nom, nor am I clueless about food and whatnot. I would go to France and eat my way though all the macarons (that's right, one o) and tarts and gorge myself on pate and soups. I would go to Japan and try every type of sushi, ramen, and dessert there was. I would go to China and eat noodles, bao (steamed buns), and yet more desserts. I would go to Mexico and hork down the burritos, tacos, enchiladas, empanadas, and chiles. I would have a wild time.

4. Macarons. Macarons have been an obsession of mine for a while now. Not a super long while, but just a while. They're French sandwich cookies. Two fluffy almond meringue shells are pressed together with buttercream or another flavored filling in the center. Delicious. There's a lovely bakery, Pix, that is about two hours from my house and they have delicious macarons in a ton of different flavors (my favorite being passion fruit). I love it. People sometimes call them "French Macaroons" which is absolute bullshit. Macaroons are made with coconut, not almonds. Get it right.

5. So I tried to make macarons. And they were sad fail macarons. They were squishy and sticky, not silky and crunchy. They were not flat as real macarons should be, either. But they taste good and I made epic, almond-flavored buttercream.

6. According to my friend, who is taking a religions class, there was a mistranslation. Those muslim suicide bombers didn't die for 72 virgins. They died for 72 olives. All I've got to say is, those had better be some damn good olives. Also, it wasn't so hard to be a virgin back in Mary's time - you just had to have not given birth before. Makes things easier, no?
